Son is going back to college

Saturday and I need to fix his iMac 17" LCD G4. It chimes and gets to the apple symbol startup screen and then freezes. I'm going to get a new battery tomorrow and see if that helps. I tried zapping the PRAM. What else should I try?

Yikes. Have you tried booting from an external drive? Hopefully that will get you in becauseI hate to say it, but it could be the logic board.

Boot from install CD. Run Disk Utility and repair.

Worst case, do an Archive and Install from the install CD.

How do I get the cd tray open? Its pretty much nonfunctional except for the chime and gray apple screen, also the mouse lights up.

Can I use firewire target mode to access the drive and run diagnostics? I have a ibook.

Did you try holding down the mouse button when booting it up? That used to work to eject CD's on boot, maybe it opens the tray even without a CD.

YES! I held down the mouse button and got a CD in there and booted up on the CD. Does that pretty much confirm a bad HD?

I used to get the problem with my PM G4. Try two things: boot from install CD and repair permissions with disk utility and if that doesn't work try a fresh install. That use to do the trick for me.

It could be a bad hd. Run disk utility and see what happens after repairs and when you reboot.
