Looking for 100% cotton, beefy, true-sized T-shirts. And CHEAP
Posted by: Dennis S
Date: February 27, 2013 03:38PM
I wear old soft tattered and torn T-shirts around the house and they are really looking bad, even to me. My mom and sister are always buying me new T-shirts and I have to refuse to wear them. It may be all in my head, but I cannot stand the feel of anything but 100% cotton and it has to be thick cotton. They have bought 100% cotton shirts are that thin - 1/2 the weight of my current shirts, but I can't stand the feel of them. I have long ago given up on finding them at Walmart, Target, Sears, Dillards, etc.

Any suggestions? Remember - CHEAP. (If cheap is impossible, I'm open to not so cheap.)

Try craft stores.. they often sell plain cotton T shirts in their bins.. for like, $2 each. Heavy , but they fall apart after a few washings.

The most sturdy shirts I have are a pair of Small Dog Electronics shirts I bought about 10 years ago at one of their online garage sales. Sadly they're paint splattered, but the cute Pomeranian logo still stands out.

My wife buys white t-shirts from these folks for her fabric dyeing. They're A-1.

They have colors too.

Costco has good heavy white ones but they may not be the cheapest.

Can we include heavyweight color Pocket T-shirts in this thread too?

Somewhat surprisingly, Menards had some a couple of weeks ago, very heavy 3/$4.99. Bundled with three random colors. They were white shirts vat dyed--these had tags and the tags matched the shirt color. I'm sure they are gone now but they often repeat their clothing specials.

JcPenney's Stafford brand premium weight. Not cheap, but they last forever.

lost in space's link looks good. The shipping is pretty high, though. I can get the same shirts on ebay for about the same cost, so I'll see how the shipping compares. I'll try one from ebay and see how it goes. They are running close to $8 shipped for XL colored.

Cotton prices spiked a couple years ago and many brands went to blends and/or higher percentages of poly in their t-shirts. Those that stuck with 100% cotton raised their prices and they haven't really come down much. I don't know what you consider cheap, ($2? 10? 15?) but I've seen Hanes, Jerzees and Champions around $8-$12.

If you find 100% cotton t-shirts at a price you like, buy several.

I don't often wear white Ts, but I'll give that a look.

JCP used to sell a heavy, tapered, V-neck shirt under the Towncraft brand that I really liked. Then one day they dropped that model.

My local JCPs were out, but one girl, hearing what I wanted, said they had some in the back. The first clerk didn't believe her because *she* had sold the last. It turned out the one or two packs there were returned by a woman who's husband died and "didn't need them anymore". My, um, lucky day.

They called a few JCP stores to see if they could send more their way, but no joy, OOS.

No pockets for me, though. That's what trousers are for.

$3.74 for colors

same price, different brand

the original "Beefy-T" for $5.64

they also have coupon codes, and fairly routinely have 20% off promos for subscribers/customers, which meets or beats dharma.
shipping is reasonable, free if order is over $69, so order a bunch, and the deal gets better.
Baby Buzz is also a cotton t-shirt fiend, and we have ordered all of the above for him (w/ 20% off codes, of course).

Just another option fer ya.

Thanks for the links, Buzz. But has anyone ever found TALL T-shirts in Large or Medium for us long-waisted guys? TALL seems to only come in XL or 2XL.

The Duluth Trading "Long Tail" Tees are a godsend for us long-waisted guys! When I started wearing the initial few I got as a gift, it was the first time since I was twelve years old that my T-shirt didn't come un-tucked every single time I bent over! Also they're available with a pocket in styles other than crew-neck such as V-neck and short-sleeve Henley. They're not exactly "cheap" in the conventional sense, but for me the extra length is worth the extra cost and Duluth Trading does have special offers on them on a regular basis.

We've gone for a few of these...

Gildan Tall tshirt

but as you see, they start at XLT, no M or L. I'm a hair over 6' (if I could stand up straight) or was before the major back issues kicked in, and Baby Buzz is about 6'3", and neither of us are thin, so the XLT is adequate here, plus, the Gildan is only an extra 2.5" in length, whereas the Duluth is an extra 3". Baby Buzz only uses the longer ones as a layer under his uniform for sports, not for strutting his stuff. An old college buddy has the torso length of 7'2" NBA center, stuck on a normal guy's legs... he's still tall at 6'9", but he jokes about it being easy to buy pants, and a real bitch to buy shirts and coats, and a impossible nightmare to buy an off the rack suit. Duluth is pricey, but if you're tall and thin enough to need 'em, thankfully they're there.

My wife brought me a shirt from Ohio. I love it. Its a Delta Apparel t-shirt. I loved the shirt and tracked down the manufacturer. The shirts are cheap and high quality.

Stavs,

I can't get the link to load all the way (sucky AT&T dialup), but their shirts seem to be 5.2 ounces where Hanes Beefy shirts are 6.1.
