Prevent iPhone from sleeping? iPhone purchase 101?

Hi,

How hard is it to prevent an iPhone from sleeping?

If we can do that any idea how long the battery will last? Any advice on external batteries?

Assuming it's possible to keep it awake any advice on buying an iPhone? We don't need the latest and greatest but we don't want to make any penny-wise pound-foolish decisions. We don't need much. My wife needs to be able to accept (swipe or scan - not sure how this works) visa cards and we both want mobile email:
  • New or used?
  • Which version iPhone?
  • What about contracts and locked vs unlocked (I know nothing about these options, beyond knowing they exist)?

Best Wishes,

Mitch

Not sure how to answer your question. The iPhone display will sleep after a set time. But you can still receive phone calls, listen to music, etc. in this mode. So it's not really "sleeping".

In the Settings app you can adjust that. Battery will die very fast if you don't sleep it. External batteries are available as part of a phone case.

screen lock can be set to Never but i don't know if that is the same as 'sleeping.' i'd certainly keep it plugged in if i was going to do that.

The iPhone never sleeps. It can't—it's a phone.

Depending on usage, enabled radios, use of badly behaved apps, etc. it could last as long as three days to as little as 8 hours or so. Simplest thing is to just get in the habit of plugging it into the charger every night.

The latest model, iPhone 5, is the most rugged and fastest version. It also has more screen area than its predecessors. Keep in mind that older models will fall off the update-eligible list sooner than the latest and greatest...

MitchJi, if you can explain to us a little better why you think you need the iPhone not to sleep, we might be able to help you more.

Still waiting on more info what you need to do other than swipe credit cards. The phone can sleep for that until you need it, especially if it is on a WiFi network.

But as far as versions - please shop for a iPhone 4 or above. The iPhone 4s would probably be the sweet spot as far as features .vs compatibility. The iPhone 4s uses the old dock connector which makes it compatible with a ton of iPhone accessories, plus the 4s gives you Siri and most of the lastest cool features.

There are many references to "sleeping" the 'Phone, but it's really only the display that sleeps. If there is no passcode set, a press of the Home (or "Sleep") button wakes the display up.

And as also mentioned, you can set the display to Never sleep, but it will run the battery down pretty quick.

Another recommendation for the 4S for the same reasons. Get an AC powered dock and keep the 'Phone charging when not in use.
