Hey gang,

I'm going to list some stuff on eBay tonight (software and probably a piece of clothing). I know it's good to end on a Sunday night / evening, but what about the length of listings? I think eBay said in their stats that a 5 day listing was best for certain types of goods, but I think I read that a year ago. Not sure what it's like now.

So, for software, hard drives and clothing, what would be best? I was just going to set most of it up tonight and then pay the auto list fee for the 5 days auctions to start on Tuesday.

What say you all?

General rule about length of listing is that you go longer if you have a rare item that might not appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, but may benefit from more time for that 'special' buyer to discover it, and you go shorter for more common/high demand items.

I like to go 7 days, but I usually add a "buy it now" option that is a little above the price I am looking for. That's to bring in the impulse buyer who may be willing to pay a little more for the convenience of having it now. It also mitigates some of the risk of going longer. Just be aware that you'll need to set your starting price closer to your buy-it-now, because any bids remove the buy-it-now option, and some people will bid on super low starting bids just for recreation or a lucky bargain.

I use "buy it now" on almost 100% of my listings now. That way, I get what I feel is a fair price every time. And, you can list for 30 days, so folks will have a chance to find it.

Since my wife opened a store on eBay nearly everything goes on Fixed Price and 30 days.
If it's an auction item she does 7 days and avoids Friday and Sat. nights endings.
She has over 3600 Feedback.

I have been listing a few automotive parts every Sunday for the past few weeks. I did learn an important lesson, though, after I was shipping a few items to CA and points west: don't list so late so that E. coast buyers are in bed at that point.

Plus, shipping costs seem to have doubled since I was last doing this, a number of years ago, so be upfront with the costs, as you may be selling for the cost of shipping, if they are low-dollar items.

I have never liked that. I think you should be able to have buy-it-now price on an auction right up to the end.

I agree about ending on Sunday evening and avoiding Fridays and Saturdays. Look at this forum, Saturday night is desert here. Sunday traffic picks up. just make sure that Monday is NOT a holiday.

Monday holidays are my best selling days by far! Talkin about fixed price sales. Don't do auctions anymore unless I don't care about the sale price and just want the thing outta here...

Hrm, how popular are the fixed price sales now? If I can get rid of some software just by selling it at $50 a pop each out of the gate, I may just do that. I just bought a magazine off eBay fixed price and found it convenient but didn't realize a lot of folks were using it now.

My rusty gears are turning...

Unless it will go First Class the shipping cost across the country or overseas has just gone crazy. My wife
used to be able to ship a few ounce item to Canada for about the same as the US and say the UK for just
a bit more. I think a 1oz item to Europe is now over $6. 4oz. is over $9. but there are still people overseas
willing to pay those shipping costs.

99% of what my wife sells is Fixed Price. She tries to keep 100-200 items in the store at all times.
Most ranging from $2-25.
