[Irish bands that are U2] Lighting question

I guess I didn't have much money to blow on concerts in the 90s....
I didn't realize that this sort of display was already ubiquitous almost 20 years ago. What are they using for the lights? Is it basically the same LED technology being used now, just at a much lower resolution at infinitesmally greater cost? I can't imagine what that display would have cost....

Found that when revisiting this...

(the story is that U2 was supposed to perform but cancelled because Bono fell off the stage again or something.) So the fans got an extra treat.

I wish Matt Bellamy would replace Bono on an entire U2 tour (have never been too motivated to see U2 live after seeing how lackluster Bono's performance has become over the last few years on various clips.) MB is the best rock vocalist since Freddie Mercury IMO.

I saw them on that Pop-Mart tour. It was ridiculous and highly entertaining.

Saw them on the Joshua Tree tour. Got my fill of them while that album was out.

It is what it is.
