Anyone use the Canon Powershot S2 IS camera ....

I need good indoor photos of furniture, artwork, decorative objects, hallmarks, signatures - large to small detail. I need fast, no shake shots.

I like the flip screen for taking underneath furniture details and paintings that are hung high on a wall.

I picked one of these up for $299 but have not opened it yet.

You will get the best no shake shots if you use a tripod. As an added bonus you should be able to use slower shutter speeds and smaller apertures to get better depth of field.

No time for tripod setup. I need to shoot about 300 pictures in 45 min. They don't need to be perfect, but they need to be clear.

I am documenting household items and there are thousands of them - so I need to move quickly.

I don't shoot very well, But my S1 doesn't do well in low light. Can't focus without light.

So does it need the flash in every indoor shot?

Are there other cameras that shoot better in normal indoor light?

It seems a lot of Canons have problems shooting indoors, my A80 has never shot good low light pictures. I've read this at several places.

We have the S2 and the S1. Incredible shots in Africa and Alaska. Use for eBay objects too. Greeaaat. No shake is fab. Movies to one hour wonderful.

Are you doing this for your living?

Tripod will make a huge difference--get a decent one, if you can afford it. Expect to spend about $50, unless you buy used on Ebay. I don't know what the current brands are, but Bogen and Gitzo used to be pretty good.

have S1 & S2 also, and indoor shots do better w/ flash, and S2 is noticably better in lower light situations, but would still like more improvement in that dept overall. from many 1000's of photos w/ both, including mass qty of similar subject as yours, you'll be golden as long as there is comfortable lighting in the room to start with; if it seems dim in the room, you'll just have to be a bit more careful taking each shot-- after a couple hundred shots, you'll get it dialed in. w/ the S2, custom mode will become your best friend. the image stabilization works quite well, especially for the types of shots contemplated. good luck, & enjoy.

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Take some test shots with the ISO set to 400. With the flash, that should help, especially if there is a lot of ambient room light (which, I'm sure, you *won't be able to count on).

Remember to raise the flash if you *think* you'll need it. Unlike some cameras, it doesn't pop up on it's own, if it's needed.

The Image Stabilization has a couple of settings, and one is to activate only for the picture, and not while you're composing it. This is the mode I prefer. Less drain on the battery.

Also, get some large SD cards and a couple/three sets of rechargeable batteries. There are rapid chargers available and 2300mA (and bigger) AAs charge in 15-30min, but need to cool a bit before you slide them back into the camera.

For drill, practice shooting news paper from different distances, including the macro mode. With the 12X zoom, you should be able to "get close" from any reasonable distance and read the print.

If you can do that, your pictures should get the job done.

I have an S1 that I think does pretty well indoors with flash.
It tends to be a little over lit depending on the distance, but in focus.

Setting the white balance manually will go a LONG way towards improving interior shots with Canon digicams.

Ram - I use a quick charger with 3 sets of batteries. Will the Canon work with 2200 Energizers? I bought a 2 gig card and will pick up a few more from 512 to 1.0. Previously we had been loading the photos through a card reader so that the photog could remove the photos, pop in a new card and go to the next room and get started while the computer tech loaded photos and reviewed them. Doesn't transfering the pix by cable use more battery?

Today we took over 1000 pix with 1/4 being Macro shots. I think the Canon is supposed to have a great macro mode.

Buzz - I will have to learn about the Custom Mode. So the Anti Shake will work on all kinds of shots?

N-OS-X-Tasy - I will have to learn about the white balance.

I think I will go ahead and break this Canon open and start using it. We are using a basic Sony and it sucks.

Thanks Guys.

deco- I use the 2200mAh Energizers in my S2.

One thing-- I don't know if it's those batteries or the camera, but the batteries seem to discharge quicker than rechargeable Li-I batteries that I have used.

Probably not a big deal; just be sure your battery of batteries are all fired up as you deploy.

My S1 has no macro mode. A close up lens is available.

I think the S1 has a macro

• Closeups: Very good macro performance, with good detail. However, the flash is blocked by the lens and doesn't throttle down enough. The S1 IS did quite well in the macro category, capturing a minimum area of 2.17 x 1.63 inches (55 x 41 millimeters). Resolution was high, and fine detail was strong in the dollar bill and coins. However, the coins and brooch were soft due to the very short shooting distance. (Not at all the camera's fault, depth of field is very shallow in extreme closeups like this.) A small amount of softness was noticeable in the corners along the left side of the frame, but it didn't seem too bad. The S1 IS' flash was partially blocked by the lens, and didn't throttle down for the macro area.
