I have a 2G dualie G5 w/1.5M ram. It takes about 1:10 for the start-up to complete, until the HD stops the "active" spinning, after entering password.

How long does yours take?

MDD G4 dually w/ 2GB RAM + 4 HD's, about 45 sec in Panther
G5 2.3GHz DC w/ 4.5GB RAM + 2 HD's about 1 min in Tiger

and fwiw, QS G4 dually w/ 1.5GB RAM; slower to start and louder when running than both (not just either; louder than both combined)

Dual 1.8 G4 QS, 1.5GB RAM also takes about 1min 15 sec to usability point.

I can drop that to 40-45 sec or so by getting rid of the items that start upon login and keeping my Desktop completely bare. The Finder has to keep track of that desktop stuff, and that process is included at startup.

You can test this by selecting your backup drive as Startup, cleaning off the desktop and login items, and restarting. Your next backup should return things to normal.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

I hardly ever turn off my G5. Running folding 24x7. I think it boots in about a minute though, a rev a dual 2.0 w/3.5GB RAM.
