Nah. Gas providers love this pricing and will never give up. I am old enough to remember 25¢ and it has climbed ever since. Why would they reduce price when many of us are stuck going to work and the market etc. What are we going to do ride bicyles? Hardly convenient and unsafe. As long as there more and more stupid drivers on the road, bicycling will never be safe. Here in San Jose it is worse than unsafe, it is life threatening.

As the gas prices get higher, bike riding may become safer (since fewer people would be able to drive cars).

I'd ride my bike for work, but it can be hard toting a G5 with a LCD display & a box of software 60 miles to a client.

I'm not going to ride my bike 17 miles each way to work. And I have no desire to move any closer... I used to live 3 miles away and didn't like the neighborhood. And even at 3 miles away, there's no way I'd ride a bike. May thru October in Central Florida is a fun combination of 90+ degrees/% humidity and most years we have daily thundershowers in the afternoon.

On the basis of people who should not have driver's licenses driving around at high speed in SUV's, Bicycles will never be popular and certainly are unsafe. Wishful thinking. Behavior in defiance of common sense.

Its always going to be easier to sit your a$$ into a large machine to haul it around for you.

I suspect that if you _really_ wanted to find a way to bike to work you could - but you're waiting for door-to-door bike lanes and ubiquitous bike lockers.

Let the suburbs sprawl...

As long as the curve of increase of use in the third world keeps going up at triple the rate of increase of supply, the price will continue to increase.
And by the way, the profit MARGINS of "big evil oil companies" has remained more or less constant in the last 30 years at around 7%.

Bicycles are not unsafe.
The idiots driving the cars that hit them are.

Also, the idiot bike riders who run stop signs and red lights -- and generally ride without thinking or following the laws in place -- make them 'unsafe.'

I ride my bike to work everyday.
It's only a couple of miles each way.
I love it, but I realize it's not for everybody.

You bike haters should realize that we bike commuters mean that there's one less car on the road that you have to compete with in traffic and for parking.

Road were designed and bult for ________________ (fill in the blank).

I wish they'd build/design more populated areas with alternate vehicles, and close communities for work/food so gas can be reduced. And stop travellling....

I am not against bicyles. Have had seven stolen from me. It just not make sense to go out to compete against 5000 lb. maniacs. Short people who cannot see out their
Suburbans etc. driving fast to get somewhere in a nurry.

I agree. But thats what alternate routes and deserted sidewalks are for - avoiding the maniacs.

I certainly understand that biking to work doesn't work for many people but a lot of people would be surprised if they put forth a little (and I do mean a little) work.

There are few things that are so good for your body and community. It gets right to the heart of a couple of our countries biggest problems - car dependence and lack of exercise.

The road in front of my house was originally a horse trail. Widened for horse buggies, then improved for a stage coach run. Paved in 1940. Widened and Rebuilt with bicycle lanes and sidewalks on each side in late 70ies. :-)

Never again, unless we take over Venezuela, Iran, and Saudi Arabia all at once.

in the past, i've used a bike to get to work. i liked it, except for that one time i had to lay the bike down to avoid a head-on collision with a car, and broke my elbow.

at this job, it ain't happenin'. i am basically "on call" M-F, 9-5, and have to be able to drive up to 90 minutes away at a moment's notice.

one summer during college, i biked around 18 mi/day round trip between 2 part time jobs & home. i had leg muscles like rocks. had to bring a backpack with changes of clothes so i could be non-sweaty & in long pants (job requirements).

We've already destablized the world, that would only make things worse. The prices are fear based, believe me.

I'd say it's less stable now than in a long time.
