What is this on my console. Little Square with slot

Just bought a used Toyota Corolla. Everything about this car is perfect. Except his little square on the console seems to sit not FLUSH.

What is it?, and can it be leveled?

I have something like that on a 98 Camry. It's a cover for a button that can be pressed to override the shift lock and allow you to shift out of park without starting the engine. The only time I ever needed to use that was when disassembling the console to work on a problem.

If you pop it off and put it back on, it might seat better.

Check the owners manual, it should describe it.

Have you pushed on that high edge with something?

that's for the ejector seat - don't press it!

Like said above it releases the shifter. You put the key in the slot to release.

With a Honda, when the battery is really dead, you pop the cap and stick something in there, like the key, to release it from Park, in order to move the car, in order to jump or tow it.

Proven in my mother-in-law's Honda Civic last month!

Friends parents got their Subaru stuck in a car wash. The car would start, but the transmission would not shift out of park (probably due to a leaking taillight that shorted out the brake lights).

They called a tow truck. 45 min later (spent waving people off the car wash and watching people back up) the tow truck shows up and ask have you tried the override? Huh. Grabs the keys and pushes the button and the folks are on their way.

The tab can be popped out. Underneath there'll be a release button. If the transmission shifter gets "stuck" and won't let you shift out of Park, press that button to "unstick".

Of course, all this is in the Owner's Manual.......

Folks above are correct. But if you pop it off, be careful not to lose the cover...they tend to go flying. Not a big deal when it's champagne colored like yours because you'll probably spot it right away. But if it's a sliver of black plastic on top of the steering wheel, you may never find it again.

On my car the key fits in the slot to release the gear selector. The square does not pop off.

Try it. See What happens.

I've never seen that on my cars. Is it common?

The design probably evolved over the years and across car makers. In my 98 Camry, there is no slot, you have to pop off the cover, and the owners manual recommends keeping a flat head screw driver in the car in order to do it.

In any case, it looks like it's removable in that car, although care should be taken to avoid breaking any plastic tabs that hold it in. It's also possible that a plastic tab is already broken causing it to sit crooked.

It's required on all automatic transmission equipped cars to have a shift-lock override.

From watching that video and looking at the picture in the original post, it seems that the shift lock cover is rotated 180 degrees, the video says that the slot should be at the bottom, while it's at the top in the picture. That could be the reason why it's not fitting flush.
