10-speed transmissions

Two of the biggest rivals in American industry — General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. — are again joining together to develop transmissions for their next generation of cars.

The automakers said Sunday they will team to create nine-speed and 10-speed transmissions that will be smoother and more fuel efficient than the gearboxes currently in their cars and trucks.

I would like to ask why is this better than a CVT (continuously variable transmission)? There are already cars with CVT on the road today.

CVTs can't handle as much power and break easier. They also cost more and need more maintenance.

My car has an 8 speed transmission. Get 30 mpg on the freeway with a v-8 engine.

My car has a 7 speed and it shifts like crazy. Great on the highway, but annoying around town. Sometimes a simple clutch peddle works better

CVT's can be built to handle extremely high HP, torque and handle extreme duty, here's an example:

If people understood how complicated automatic transmissions are, they'd drive a lot more conservatively.

Mine has a 6 speed and shifts when I do it. smiling smiley

If it's missing a pedal, you're not driving ;)

Good Luck!

5 speed in my Saturn SC-2 and 38-40 mpg on the highway. Not bad for a 20 year old with over 200,000 miles. Pedals rule !

Just the thing for suburban cowboys in their diesel crew cabs--truck driver wannabees.

Interesting. Regardless, the implementation in cars have proven otherwise for whatever reason.

Two questions:
1. What is the normal operating speed of that tractor?
2. What are the recommended service intervals on that transmission?

When they can build a modern auto/light truck automatic transmission that can handle 800 lb/ft of torque, then we can talk.
