Dang, those 2011 models sure cost a pretty penny for a two year old computer.

Interesting how some of the iMacs have under the price:

Save: $xxx
xx% off

And others don't.

Maybe after the 2012 redesign models appeared some the 2011's became more valuable *(:>*

Yeah, still a bit pricey.

Too bad they didnt have USB 3. Wonder if they will ever make a TBolt to USB 3 cable?

Still, a 27" 3.4 i7 with 32 GB ram and a DIY SSD should be a smokin' machine for many, many years -- regardless of your profession. Add a second 27" screen and some TB storage (if it would ever come down in $$)

$750 for 8TB: [www.amazon.com]

Oh... and the $30 cable...

can you even buy an i7 iMac in the 2012 model?

can you configure a 7200 RPM hard drive?

add the cost of a Superdrive when comparing, too.

edit: I see you must choose the more expensive model to upgrade to an i7 processor.

21.5 in:
3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Apple USB SuperDrive

$1,778

Theres no need to buy an Apple labeled superdrive. Any normal USB portable DVD drive will work fine, $30.

$1789 for the 2011 27" 3.4 i7 is essentially the same as the 2012 version, but its $2200...

that's right. $400 less for no USB 3, but FW800 and an optical drive. and less RAM, but we wouldn't be sticking with 4 GB or 8 GB anyway, right?

this 2012 model 27in refurb for $1869 makes more sense to me

Optical drive loss is not a big deal. The main advantage of that slot in the older iMacs is the ability to pull it and add an SSD and make a DIY Fusion drive.

FW800 is a poor substitute for USB3.

Unless you need the graphics, USB3 alone makes the new Mac Minis plus a nice, matte-finish monitor a much better setup for many people than the new, still-glossy iMac, or the slighter older, even-more-glossy USB2 iMac.

Unless you already have several peripherals you don't want to replace. For example, a FireWire analog-to-video bridge. Or backup drives with FW800 but no USB 3.0. How well does USB 3.0 daisy-chain? Oh, right. It doesn't.

check the speed test in this video. USB 3.0 is faster, but not really by much.

3:33 for FW800 folder/file copy, 3:21 for USB3 folder/file copy.

What's the RAM limit on a Mac Mini w/ USB3? How's the Intel 4000 built-in GPU that shares RAM?

There is room in the 2011 iMac for an SSD without doing away with the optical drive. Our sponsor sells a nice kit and has an installation video.
