safari never finishes loading some pages

Have you ever had this happen? Safari's little progress bar gets to 80% and hangs for a really long time. Why does this happen?

WHY does it happen? Because Safari is choking on some kind of an ad or applet -- usually Java or Flash or VERY badly-written javascript, in my experience.

What to do about it? Find a program or style sheet that blocks such things. Pages load MUCH faster.

And when it does hang , you hit re-load/refresh and it then does the whole process in a flash with no problems ?
Yes.

But then, I've had that happen with IE on XP
and have not been able to prove that it's a browser/platform specific problem.

I've always figured it was on the server end.

Try something like PithHelmet to block out the crap. [culater.net]

By the way, in Safari's Window menu, you can pull up the Activity window, and see exactly what is not loading.

The video store rents porn DVDs.
Much more convenient.

'cept for that whole "ick" factor, though.

I was having a similar problem, and this was my solution.

My Comcast connection had been slow in loading pages, both in Safari and Firefox. I just deleted all the DNS Servers in my network settings and my speed is super fast again. YMMV

I've found that emptying the cache will often cause a page to finish loading.

If this is a problem for the reasons chas suggests, then nevermind.

Another cause of slow-loading "last bit" of pages that I forgot in my earlier post:

Check to see if "autofill" is on. If so, UNCHECK the "other forms" button (which is on by default). That's Safari's autofill helpfully trying to find some bit of data to put in a blank somewhere and cannot -- which means like two FULL minutes before it times out and tries the next blank.

Turning that off can make a DRAMATIC difference on some pages.
