Apple battery recall of its own (Lithium)

Would this (educated guess) be ALL the macs that have lithium batteries and what do they replace it with? I thought lithium took up into the 21st century.

Dang. I was hoping for a new battery, just on general principles. No luck, because the 17" isn't on the list.

Grrr! My 12" Powerbook battery falls in the recall range, but its serial number doesn't validate through Apple's online form. Looks like hours on the phone for me...

And now Apple's battery recall web site appears to be Slashdotted back to the Stone Age...

Just talked to Apple---the page that processes the recalls is getting slammed. The serial number for your battery may qualify--but it states it doesn't--this will be fixed this evening, and it does no good to call--they will ask you to process it online later. They ask that you run the computer with power adapter only-no battery until then.

Yeah Ken, I got the same thing: support is also hamstrung by the website getting Slashdotted and not having all the serial numbers active. Try the website later tonight or call AppleCare again tomorrow.

Guess I'll look on the bright side and be glad to get a fresh battery out of it.

I'm getting a new battery. Didn't notice anything wrong with mine, but I'll definitely take a new one. It's 2 years old at this point.

They take a CC number, they send you the new one via DHL (overnight in my case), you use the new one, throw the old one in the box, call DHL, they pick it up. If you don't keep the old battery, they don't charge your CC.

My iBook has the "burning battery" problem. I'll just run it on AC until the dust settles.

The replacement iBook G4 battery I bought for my old iBook G3 also falls under the recall. If the recall form requires a valid iBook G4 serial number, I guess I can attach it to my mom's iBook G4. The exchange form takes up to three battery serial numbers, so I can get hers taken care of as well if it needs it.

I've got my battery right here in my hands. Seeing as how it won't hold a charge for much over 45 minutes and I actually use an OWC battery in my iBook. I was hoping so much that mine was on the recall list, but the serial numbers don't seem to match up. I will check again later, since the date range is right for my iBook.

If your serial number is in the range I listed above--you will qualify--it hasn't migrated to the overloaded Apple servers yet

Ken Sp.,
My serial number, from the bottom of the battery is HQ41 37 RQPV9A. I don't think that looks anything like the ones you posted, so I guess that I am out of luck. It is Model A1061 though. Ah well, I guess no new battery for me. sigh.

"Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo are scheduled to hold a summit meeting in San Jose, California to discuss manufacturing standards for lithium-ion batteries made for portable and handheld electronics. The decision follows reports of laptop batteries bursting into flame, ultimately resulting in a massive recall by Dell last week of 4.1 million notebook batteries. Both Dell and Sony on Monday admitted in a statement that a design flaw in certain lithium-ion batteries could potentially ignite or cause an explosion. The companies to hold the summit meeting are part of the OEM Critical Components Committee of the IPC-Association Connecting Electronics Industries. The organization boasts roughly 2,400 members involved in making, designing or using electronic components, according to the E-Commerce Times."

so there is a chance that both my G4 powerbook and the Dell Inspiron laptop will get a spanking new battery? Cool!

UPDATE: Aww, never mind! Neither laptop's battery is the recalled one. Oh, well.

SoCal for now.

My PB12 and battery qualify.

My iB is a G3 and out of the running.

Anyone know if Newer Tech replacements qualify? I bought one for my TiBook G4 and sent the original Apple battery back to Newer.

I'll assume not, unless someone knows otherwise.

"My iB is a G3 and out of the running."

Running the original battery that shipped with the iBook G3, or a replacement bought during the iBook G4 era?

That's my situation with my own iBook G3: bought a replacement that falls under the recall program. Supposedly the Apple site will accept an iBook G3 serial number along with an iBook G4 battery serial number, but the site's been too slammed again today for me to verify this.

I have a iBook G3 with a recently purchased battery. The battery is one of the ones listed in the recall. I filled out the online application for a replacement and it accepted the serial number from my iBook, as well as the battery.

I should get a new battery in "4 to 6 weeks."
