Look like this will address some of the issues such as moire and compression artifacts. Could make me take a serious look at getting a 5D3 just for video. You will have to pay a pretty penny for ultra fast CF cards though.

I have no other words to describe it – this is huge news.

Magic Lantern have done the seemingly impossible and given us a continuous raw recording mode on the Canon 5D Mark III. Once activated in the menus the 5D Mark III becomes essentially a full frame Blackmagic Cinema Camera and amazingly mine has not yet exploded. No more short bursts of raw, this is the real thing.

The image is leaps and bounds ahead of any other DSLR. We’re talking Alexa / Red league here, yet full frame. The first ever raw video shooting full frame camera at that. I’m getting continuous recording at a data rate to the card of 90MB/s and the camera hardly breaks into a sweat.

Crazy quality, if all that pans out well.

OTOH, if you just need great home quality video, there are certainly other sources for DSLRs that will/can be hacked for cheap.

I hacked my first gen Lumix GH1 and the video is more than good for home video quality, and I can use old legacy glass and still have metering.

If you only have about $450, you can pick up a GH1 body and do the hack yourself.

big news for sure. What will be even more impressive is when other RAW frame rates are enabled in the firmware. Seems that the limiting factor may just be card speed? This will be even more useful for folks when 29.97/30fps RAW is made available...folks shooting for TV need that framerate, unless they want to up/down convert from a different rate.

Now I sort of wish I'd spend the extra $100 on a couple of 1000x cards instead of 800x, but since I don't actually have a need to shoot RAW video, no big deal...

Not my could this mess with Canon's Cinema line of 1080p offerings but also sales of other systems. I like the look of full frame 35mm shallow depth of field.

Same sensor in the Cinema line - 35mm.

But yes - loads cheaper. Similarly, the GH1/GH2 video hacks stole a lot of thunder from the 5D2 when those were introduced years ago.

I had been thinking about a GH2 but then news broke of the Blackmagic pocket camera. Now that this 5D3 hack is here, I would love to have a dual use camera for still and video. My Nikon SLR can give me the shallow full frame depth of field but can't do so without moire. This 5D3 hack somehow bypasses the line sampling that creates the moire. The 5D3 is a more practical SLR system with a much faster and accurate AF system and lenses that can shoot low light action/sports in still mode and give shallow depth of field with the right lenses. We'll see how easily this hack is implemented, it is in Alpha right now.
