not real chrome, of course, just that cheap plastic coating. any ideas of how/what to re-cover this? the microwave door handle, if you are curious.

[www.amazon.com] ? ... I've used this stuff before, and it gives a really nice result. Apply with a paint sponge, or even cotton balls. There's also this: [www.amazon.com]

Can you order a new handle?

What color is the plastic (I assume) under the faux chrome? I'd be inclined to remove the rest of the chrome and leave it at that. Can you remove the handle?

I don't think that the chrome spray paint will hold up well under use.

If you can take off the old handle, you should clean off all the plastic chrome, spray the stripped handle with a good primer, like Kilz or BIN primer/ sealer, then spray the handle with a metallic spray paint in chrome or stainless steel. If you prime it properly, and give it several thin top coats, the finish should look pretty good. I have primed and spray painted all sorts of things, and the secret is in the prep and priming.

so I should have mentioned that I cannot remove the handle without removing the door and I cannot remove the door without removing the microwave, and that would be a major league pain. It's not worth it at that level for me, but the underlying color is a white-ish plastic that is pretty drab and ugly, so I'm motivated to try something on the existing handle.

it has to be a covering, not a paint, but thanks for teh suggestions.

i"m thinking something from the JDM world, like this stuff:
carbon fiber!
