PM G4 (Sawtooth) - Drive kits?
Posted by: Jp!

I want to put a couple more drives in my PMG4 Sawtooth. Do I need to or can I buy a drive bracket/wiring harness kit?

Any links? Tips?

If you want more than two hard drives and two optical drives, you'll have to buy an additional PCI card to supply the necessary extra ATA or SATA interfaces.

I recall mounting one or two drives on the flat metal spaces on the bottom of the case, directly to the side of the default 2-drive bracket. Forgot how I did it, though.

Okay, I checked and you're right. There are screw holes in the bottom of the chassis. I just got a ata card, and had not seen those holes. Thanks.

you cant add 2 optical drives without a dremel or a hacksaw...

those 2 spaces silenco is talking about are drive brackets designed to hold more harddrives

2 stacked in the back and 2 side by side next to that

you could add 2 more with your ATA card, but it might take a custom ATA cable

one below and one above the optical drive

Then all you will need will be power splitters (depending on how many drives you add).

I believe there are enough power connections for either 3 or 4 drives in the bottom.

If you're going big, I'd suggest waiting until Outpost has the 400 GB IDE Seagates for $110-ish again. That was an awesome price..

That was fast. Already RAIDed my drives...

Using SoftRAID 3.5.

I like those drive sleds. I had to clip/cut some of the plastic wiring ties to stretch them just right. Seems to be running just fine.

"Seems to be running just fine"

That's a neat trick, since the drives aren't hooked up to the controller card....

And dust off that video card, will ya? Looks like a crime scene after looking for fingerprints!

The pic was a minute before I attached the drives to the card, silly.

I wanted to not hide the drive part with the ribbon cables.

I was amazed at how quickly it all went in. Do you want a pick with the cables attached? You'll have to wait, the DVD player I am using to load software on it is from this computer and I had 'duct' taped (actually it' strapping tape) the lexar CF card reader to it. Oh wait....I can use this USB cable.

Don't be offended by the image name! smiling smiley
