Installing MS Office 2011 on an iMac with no Optical Drive...

Setting up my moms new iMac at the office and went to load her new MS office and then remembered she didn't have a optical drive... Guess I should of spent the extra $50 and got an external super drive... So, I went to download it from MS's site and I was told "this license does not allow for a digital download" (or something like that). So, I tried to download the demo so I could activate it... No luck.

So, what are my options? Share the disc from the older 17" iMac? Buy a superdrive?

you can make a DMG from the older imac, then copy it to the new iMac.

install via the old TDM standard, or create a disk image and dropbox it, or similar digital swap to the iMac.

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Huh?

I do that all the time.

...Anyway, easy peasy: Get both iMacs on the same network and copy the installer from the disc via filesharing. The Office installer doesn't need to be on its original media to work.

What decay said.

Best way.

Just did it for an MB Air last week. The new app store blows for corporate.

If you do decide to buy an external optical drive, I think bestbuy has (had?) one on sale for $29. Will work fine with an iMac. That is if you want to get it in a store right away.

If you can wait, newegg has one for $17 + free shipping: [www.newegg.com]

Until I got the latest version I was running vX. it was an upgrade only version I purchased at Goodwill in 2004. Before Installing, it would need to find an oder version of Office. So I kept copied my Office 98 folder and kept it on the same thumbdrive I placed an image of the vX disc.

Yep!

Just enable DVD/CD Sharing on the Mac with the built-in optical drive, insert the Office Install disc, then access it on the new iMac.

Works like a charm.

i think MS removed the downloadable demo.

you can't get office from them without creating an account and logging into it with the license code.
