It's not listed on any structurally deficient bridge lists
why would you not fix something that isn't broken ?

...especially given that you don't fix those you already know are broken. Time for more tax breaks and spending cuts.

Apparently an over sized Semi hit a bridge truss causing the collapse.

Did CalTrans do the original build and installed rustable bolts and tendons as they did on the new S.F. Bay Bridge?

Everything you put on a bridge over salt-water is rustable. It's called StainLESS, not StainPROOF.

stainless pits, it doesn't surface rust (for the most part) You get the wrong stainless alloy, and it will rust. Technically it is called CReSS. Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel. I stress RESISTANT. I have a stainless 8qt stock pot with some pits on the bottom inside. Once you get a micro-pit, it becomes a nucleation site for bubbles when the liquid boils. And then it just gets worse. Same issue with high speed marine propellers on boats.

Oh, stainless can indeed rust! And yes, it's usually because it was the wrong grade of stainless for the application.

Also, I miss remembered the bay bridge case in any event... the issue there was they used galvanizing when they shouldn't have. The galvanizing process introduced hydrogen, and caused hydrogen embrittlement in the bolts - many of which are already showing cracks. Very little to do with corrosion, everything to do with poor material and finishing choice.
