So my new(to me) truck has no radio...

...and I am trying to think of creative ways to add functionality without actually buying a new one. More for fun than out of convenience or regard to cost. It is a 2000 Dodge Dakota, so a 1.5DIN opening for the stereo.

I don't have any CDs so I have no use at all for a CD player in the mix. I have 2 stereo amps of sufficient power to drive the speakers in the truck easily so whatever I come up with need not have an amp.

I was looking for 1.5DIN touchscreen monitors to interface with a carputer but couldn't find one. I do have a Raspberry Pi that I would have no problem using for this. I also have an iPhone 5 that I always carry that I could use as well. Also open to any other ideas.

The only downside I see would be not getting FM radio, was there an iPod that had FM capabilities? But I would like to keep costs reasonable and not have extra devices just for this.

My thought right now is to install the amp, wire it in, and then get a dock mounted on the dash for the iPhone that will charge and provide audio out via the Lightening cable to the amp. That will let me use my music on the phone plus Pandora and charge my phone in one shot.

Otherwise, I could add an old airport express into the mix and use that for Airplay and then not even need a dock to stream the audio..but will that stream Pandora?

Or something I haven't thought of?

Classic Hillbilly solution involves a beat up boom box that is duct taped to the overhead.

I have been accused of being slightly redneck on occasion but that is well beyond anything I would even consider doing... I have been just using the iPhone speakers turned up all the way and sticking the phone in the visor.

I could, but that wouldn't fit in my dash opening. I only have 1.5 DIN. To shoehorn that in I would lose my center vents. I'm not above modifying the dash but I wouldn't want to lose the vents.

Edit: I also don't like having a sperate keyboard and mouse. If I did this it would have to be a touch screen.

I've seen some installs where the truck dash has been modified to accept an iPad. Kinda cool, methinks.

Google Images for "ipad dash mod" - lots of interesting photos.

I guess this isn't very much "fun", but aren't there apps that allow you to listen to the radio on your iPod/iPhone? Our local public radio station has one. Also, there's Pandora if you just want to listen to music.

I don't know how people drive with iPads and DVD players in the dash.

Why not just go to the junk yard and get a used radio?

No Pandora or audio inputs on a factory radio...

I am really surprised how much technology you get for the price on some of the aftermarket radios nowdays. Bluetooth capable, usb and possible iPhone/iPod ready for about $100 street if you shop around maybe? Just add a dash kit...

That one looks really nice. I think that is going to be my backup if I don't do something custom.
