...make sure you get a fresh hardware kit, too.

That is all.

Oh Amen. And make sure you have a magnet on a stick with a stick that is at least 2/3 of the width of the car. Because that one spring will sproing off and fly into the most inaccessible spot under your car. Usually down the floor drain.

Rear brakes are the ONE brake job I've decided to stop doing myself.

Garage Floor drains aren't illegal where you are?

...and make sure that you have a micrometer handy to determine whether the rotors need replacing too.

I am absolutely amazed to discover myself on this rock ball rotating around a spherical fire. It's a very odd situation. There are tools to control those springs, making the job quite easy.

If you are measuring rotors while replacing brake shoes, you have one odd vehicle.

Not in a home. They run to the sanitary sewer though. Nothing goes to the storm drains but storm water (and sump pump water).

I'd simply suggest that the only rear brake work on drums one should ever do is converting rear drums to rear discs

Yep. I have no clue what a "hardware kit" is, but none of my cars have brake shoes either. What finally did get me to buy a micrometer was needing to measure my brake discs when replacing the brake pads.

if your car has disks all around, in that case the emergency/parking brake is probably shoes contained within the rear disk.

it's a bear of a job. just completed and saved $500 over the stealership cost.

So get back to work and sweat some more
The sun will sink, and we'll get out the door
It's no good for man to work in cages
Hits the town, he drinks his wages
You're frettin', you're sweatin'
But did you notice you ain't gettin'?

for drum brakes, the hardware kit is a replacement set of pins, cups, springs and clips to replace most components when doing a drum brake job. You re-use some levers and the self-adjuster, unless they are really worn. The pins can get bent, and the springs can lose their tension from all the heating/cooling cycles if you drive your car hard.

Last time I did rear drum brakes ( long enough ago that I don't know where the tools are any more )
a "hardware kit" was springs and shoe pins .

No shoes in the rear discs of either of my car - I've had the rear discs on both. One car is tough because the disc doesn't have a set screw, and getting the rotor to stay in place while placing the caliper and pads on, and then putting the wheel on... is tough. The other is tough because I can't get the carrier off very easily. Requires a triple square bit, which is tough to find. And there's no room to get a breaker bar in there.

Because for some stupid reason VW/Audi doesn't believe in studs on the hubs and use lug bolts instead. Makes it stupid hard and dangerous to change a tire on the side of the road trying to line it all up.

Well, once it's on the disc stays in place. On the GTI, there's a set screw on all the rotors. On the C5 only on the front discs. As far as alining it, there's a plastic stub to help with that. It's in the tool box next to the jack. But, yeah, I know a few people who've done stud conversions. There is a lot more room to smack the rotor, however, when there's no studs. Easier to get the rotor off.

I seem to remember that the Dodge Power Wagons had the parking brake on the drive shaft. Was this a Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth thing also?
Regarding mrbigstuff's comment about four wheel disc brake cars and shoes in the rear, I have a car which I drove 35 miles using only the parking brake because the master cylinder failed. The parking brake shoes were in the front.
Who was the manufacture and who made the brakes? Hint, the car is yellow.

Oops. I didn't think they made cars with drum brakes any more so I assumed he was talking about pads when he said "shoes".

Some Saab's had their parking brake as a drum unit on the front axle along with the disk brakes. I remember rebuilding the ones on my ex-wife's '73 Saab 99 in the mid-'80's.

Yeah, well, Saab used a high magnesium content aluminum alloy engine block that required yearly anti-freeze flushes to prevent swiss cheesing the castings from electrolysis.

Hmm, I've never had a problem doing brake shoes.

EDIT: except the one time I was helping a friend and he forgot to release the brake which made it kind of impossible to get the new drum on...
