Woz on Taxes

Mr Wozniak told the conference the only solution was to tax large firms like individuals.

He said: "People are not taxed on profit; they are taxed on income. Corporations should be taxed the same as people, in my mind that is how it should be, that would make things fair and right.

"That means corporations pay taxes on all of their revenues or people only pay it on a tiny amount called profit and until we rectify that, the whole problem is just with us forever.

I really wish Woz would stick to technical talk instead of business issues.

Taxing a corporation on just revenue is crazy, imagine a grocery store (with very small profit margins) that was taxed on the revenue it collects at the cash register and couldn't subtract out what it spends on the products they sell, or the salaries/benefits that it pays employees, or the rent and utilities for the building.

And people do get taxed on profit, that's what the tax return is all about, all of those deductions get subtracted out.

I agree w/ Woz, up to a point, as it makes absolute sense; at least in theory. In reality, it's the bureaucracy that screws things up. Essential services like healthcare, education, police/fire, should be funded by gross receipt/revenue based taxes, and less essential items such as bureaucrats' junkets ought to be funded by taxes on the bureaucrats and their cronies. The system is broken, big time, and taxing the folks that can least afford it, is not the way to fix it. Taxing the flow of the money is a better solution; but it needs responsible, non-political management.

Our state Washington has a B and O tax. It is a tax on revenue. Even if you loose money you are still taxed.

This is off-topic, but I follow Woz on Twitter and he produces the most boring tweets in the universe. All he tells us is where he ate, what he ate, what his dog ate, and when he walks his dog. Oh, hold on, I told a lie. He also tells us when he is about to board a plane. sleepy smiley

Businesses spend insane amounts of money for "Tax Purposes" when, if those same expenditures were to be considered ONLY for their true business worth, would never have happened. This had to be stopped but, I doubt there are any politicians with enough brains or balls to actually move our tax system in this direction. Were actually moving rapidly in the opposite direction. This explains our and the rest of the world's, dismal situation. sad smiley

Any business to survive has to includes its expenses in the prices of its products or services. Taxes are expenses. If you tax a business, you are really just taxing its customers.

The issue with all taxes isn't the idea of taxes. It's the irrational and illogical compilation of exemptions, loopholes, and outright social engineering that make it madness.

Imagine a company that charged more or less for services based on the number of children , or if you owned a home, etc.
