Yuppers, I'd stick a Mac Pro print on that can.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

It looks to me like something I can't post, as there is no way to guarantee the viewer's "safe search" settings.

I still think the new Mac Pro is a good, functional design, but I'm sure Apple will price it out of reach of most users.

Agreed, although it seems that the iMacs are plenty powerful for "most users".

Agreed.

Although it has a fan, it's shape adds much to the cooling. I wonder if the fan aids in cooling of the video cards.

Even adding a fan to the Cube didn't do much if anything for the video itself.

I'm not really crazy about its aesthetics, though. But I think it will be easy enough to get used to and let fade into the background.

About the video cards-- have we found out if they are interchangeable; do they have some kind of standardized connector? In another thread somebody said something like "...assuming the cards are upgradeable..." but I have no idea why anybody would assume that. There was no hint or indication that I could see they these might be upgradeable.

The Cube had two plug and play options, all the rest required physical modification and ref lashing. If Apple is counting on other companies or their current card manufacturer for upgrades, that seems like a big risk. Maybe there's a contract.

If not priced out of reach for the market it was designed for, it could do better than just ok.

And maybe some peripherals will proliferate.

Of course the fan aids in cooling the video hardware. The central core collects heat from everything and the fan cools everything, it's all centralized.

I would assume the video cards are individually replaceable, perhaps only with an identical service part from Apple. They will be keeping this new design for a long time (10 years was their design life projection) so future versions' faster GPU hardware could conceivably be used in this initial release MacPro. Now who knows if Apple would sell those parts to the consumer, perhaps an in-store procedure.

Ooooh, ok then.

I didn't know where the fan was located. The Cube had the option of a fan, centrally located, but didn't cool the video card much if at all.

I would assume the video cards are individually replaceable,

That's pretty much a given and not what I was talking about when I mentioned upgradeable.

One indication of a possible video upgrade roadmap is Shiller's remark about how Devs should be using OpenCL. According to Aaron Hillegass of Big Nerd Ranch, Apple wants it used so that video drivers will work with cards from different manufacturers.

If that's the case, Apple wouldn't be "locked" into one manufacturer, and there wouldn't be any/many issues if Apple used a different source.

As a Pro machine, it would be an insult at best if the only way to upgrade the video would be to the latest MP with a newer card, i.e. mini and iMac. The CPU is soldered on so there's no DIY upgrading, for most people anyway.
