Why are light/lux meters so expensive?

Most simple electronic devices have gotten extremely low in price except a basic light meter. A decent one is still a couple hundred dollars. It seems like it should be such a simple thing to measure, can't someone build one for less?

I think it's demand. I have always wanted a good one as well - but since most good cameras do a decent job, and only pros (and semi pros) really NEED one.... not a lot are sold therefore prices stay high.

Pr0n will hopefully comment and tell us where to buy a super-duper-whiz-bang model for way less than we had ever dreamed, and we'll both then run out and buy it. ;>)

Good Luck!

An eponymous device to be sure.

Probably because it's still a specialty item not used by average photogs.

Perhaps you could find some eleemosynary institution willing to give you one for free, or borrow it.

What do you consider to be decent? Here is one for $95 -

They might cost more than you expect but any photographer that uses one will tell you its a deal considering the reliability and longevity of the device.

I would guess you could build your own for $20, but you would have to calibrate it against another one. What is your time worth to you?

I paid over 500.00 for my minolta flash meter years ago.
Now on Ebay for under 100.00
So I would say prices has come way down.

There are plenty on Ebay now cheap.

Digital meters are a bit expensive, but old analog ones can be really cheap
