Is this a bad time to purchase an Apple TV? HBO Go makes it worth it for me.

It's a low cost purchase, and it's quite functional.

Who knows when and if Apple will sell one with built-in capability.

I think of these things more as appliances than technology. Our ATV2 has actually gone UP in value...!

I wonder if they will change the wireless protocol to match the new Airport Extreme.

Not sure if it matters to the original poster, but isnt' it correct that in order to use the HBOGo feature on the Apple TV, one must have a cable/satellite subscription with HBO?

In other words, if I'm correct about this, simply getting the Apple TV will not get you HBO. Or am I wrong?

You're correct, if I'm correct lol!

Also, I have DirecTV as I mentioned in another thread and I'm shutout of getting the ESPN channels that were just announced as available, as well. Sucks.

Want to know more craziness? Can't watch HBO on the Roku if you are a Comcast subscriber.

The AppleTV has been great for us. We have a huge DVD and Blu-Ray collection and have them all ripped to
a ext. HD connected to our iMac and can pull up most anything I want to watch plus any movies I have made
with my iPhone. HBO GO was just icing on the cake for us. I think every season of every HBO series is on
HBO GO, I know Deadwood, Rome and Game of Thrones is on there. Airplaying from the iPhone or iPad is great.

That's our setup, only we use Netflix instead of HBO.

We are only waiting for Amazon instant streaming.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand why such a big deal is being made about HBO Go on the AppleTV. On the iPhone/IPad/Ipod Touch, sure, it lets you watch HBO programming on the devices. But, on an AppleTV? Not a big deal. The TV that has the TV likely already has a cable box/FIOS box/satellite box connected to it. Just as easy to watch HBO content off the cable box on the HBO channels or HBO Video on Demand (VOD).

My wife and I receive HBO as a part of our FIOS package. We can watch HBO content on the normal HBO channels. Verizon provides HBO VOD free of charge to HBO subscribers. SO, we can watch HBO VOD at our convenience on any TV that has a box. No need to change to the AppleTV.

The only benefit I can see to having it on an AppleTV is if you can send the content from said device to other devices, i.e. a computer on the same network. Or, if you're a subscriber to HBO but don't necessarily have a cable box/FIOS box/satellite box for each TV. So, for a TV without a box, you just use the AppleTV for HBO content. Or, you take the AppleTV with you on the road to use it with, say, a TV at a hotel or friends/family home.

I guess you could say I see some value to the addition of HBO Go on an AppleTV. Some is the operative word. It's useless without a subscription to HBO and Time Warner doesn't have plans to let people have stand-alone subscriptions to it.

Does it let you share your HBO subscription with other family members?

It should let you watch HBO at a second site.

But the main advantage is really a teaser for the future where you pay for TV a la carte.

It's a big deal to me. When we go away in the winter, we continue to pay for HBO, but we can't watch it. This way, we take the ATV with us and we also take our HBO subscription. I have the 1st gen ATV, and we only rent movies once in a while with it.

iaJim,

That's one of the examples of how the inclusion of HBO Go has some value . 'course, it brings to mind that if you're visiting a friend/family who doesn't have HBO but does have an AppleTV, you can enjoy HBO by signing into your HBO account. Or, you can give someone your username and password and allow them to watch HBO via your account even if you're not actually on site. Likely, letting someone else use your HBO Go account is a violation of the TOS but that's a different matter entirely.

Robert M,
If I could replace the cable box, which I most assuredly don't want, with the streaming box of my choice, then premium TV might actually start making sense on some level.

Silvarios,

You can replace the box but you still have to pay for the subscription to the premium channel. So, at best, you'll save the cost of the box. Then again, removing the cost of the box, you also lose the ability to watch all of the other channels. Pros and cons and still of limited value.

Except there are increasingly more premium TV apps for the non cable/sat TV boxes. I don't need the clunky service provider box, just the content available on the box of my choice.

With the encrypting of even basic channels on cable, I'll never return to cable service as I don't want a cable box for each TV. On the flip side, this app based delivery would make a cable sub tolerable.

Now, that would be an interesting circumstance if it were carried through by lots of people and lots of available channels some day: everyone paying a cable or sat subscription fee but not using the service, only an Internet media player.

Just think, everything could turn full circle and the cable and sat companies could no longer claim to be providing service, just the content as hostage. Hmm ...

As for the HBO-Go offerings, we have discovered that there are many more movies to choose from on the ATV than on the HBO on demand offerings.
