Larry/Jamie:

How loud is the fan noise? I got rid of a dual 933 Powerlogix because the noise was too much for me.

thanks!

A while back OWC Larry said something like "Shhh... Wait and see!"

And nada.

I'd like to convert my 1.25 SP into a Dual 1.xx.

Have these been dropped?

This is new? These have been around for a while, just not at OWC I guess.

For $600 more you could get a brand new computer with two processors, and two generations ahead of that one.

That's not what I want.

These have been around for a while, just not at OWC I guess.

I don't know if they're new or not, but OWC is the sole distributor (as far as I know) of NewerTech gear.

And Larry is not only a distributor, he's the president.

this is news from today.

i'd love to find a bargain G5, even a "lowly" dual 1.8, for under $1000.
thought i had a line on a dual 2.0, but dealing with CUSA on the phone is like pulling teeth... can't get a manager or the Mac guy on the line to save my life.

i'd like to hear some reader reports, even at xlr8yourmac.com.

I've been watching these for a long time...

[RCH:US:101" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">cgi.ebay.com]

They usually have the dual 1.8, 1.7, and a plethora of single procs. It's a different brand name on the box, but same exact processor upgrades.

They are the same processors, but they are not the same boards.

Hi-
The Newer Technology MAXPOwer G4 most certainly is NOT the same as the Giga pictured.

Noise comparison;

Dual 2.0GHz Power Mac G5 at idle processor load - 52db
Stock Power Macintosh G4 "Digital Audio" - 54db
NewerTech MAXPower Dual upgrade - 55db
Stock 1.25GHz Mirror Drive Door - 57db
PowerLogix PowerFoce47 processor upgrade (Dual) - 59db
Dual 2.0GHz Power Mac G5 under FULL load - 64db

Hope that helps-

Good Luck!

that helps, Jamie. thanks for a timely response!

my G4 "DA" w/1 GHz Sonnet, using the fan shroud from the dual 533/733 config, isn't obtrusive in my office. the Maxpower is about 1 dB more.

that's a LOT of Flash media for a simple eBay auction.

Looking at the install document, it looks like Newer is ready to go with the 7448 G4 chip as soon as Freescale is ready to ship chips. That is if they ever ship the 7448. Which is what I was waiting for, but may just end up getting one of the 7447A based upgrades. Anyone know how the Gigadesigns upgrade matches up to the Powerlogix and Sonnet upgrades for sound levels? The Newer Tech is looking pretty good on noise so far.

In my experience, the Gigas run HOT. If you look at that above eBay auction, take a peek at the picture. The front left is a copper bar - it's about 1/16th of an inch thick, and runs from the hottest parts of the processor card and fins out away from the side of the card, to cool those components.

In all seriousness, I burned my finger real good on one of those when we were trying them out about a year and a half or more ago. They also used 40mm fans, running at 5v from the card slot itself, which draws power through the same point that the processors need to get their power from.

The Newer Technology card was designed to NOT do that, since you can use fans running at 12v, resistored down to still move a lot of air, but not running at full speed.

We did not compare their cards when developing the new processor upgrade, because we don't sell the GigaDesign cards and therefore did not have any on hand to test.

Good Luck!

Was the MDD line just thrown in for reference, or do you have a processor upgrade for it?

Where is the OWC page where I can select different processors and compare the
benchmarks? I thought I had it bookmarked but I can't find it and I can seem to
locate it from the homepage. I need to see if the upgrade is worth the money for
my 533 Dual.

interesting benchmarks...

Time to export 500MB DV File to MPEG-4 Using Quicktime 6
- Sonnet G4/1.0GHz 7455A Encore/ST - 142.34 Seconds
- Newer Technology G4/2.0GHz 7447A MAXPower G4 - 185.87 Seconds

so my single 1.0 is faster than the NT 2.0? (for this one test)

amazing.

Just a note, there is no listing for the G4 867 Quicksilver (2001) model in the benchmark comparison chart.

Remember the 7447As don't have much in the way of cache: 512K L2 and no L3. IIRC, the main advantage the 7447As have over the 7455As is in power consumption and thermal profile, which helps make the dual processor upgrades feasible.

I've also been waiting for 7448 upgrades, but that seems like such a pipe dream after all these years. I could see myself selling my G5 when I go Intel, while keeping my heavily-upgrade old Gigabit Ethernet G4 for Classic/PPC stuff.
