Small Town Take-Out
Posted by: Jack D.

You know, I love living in a small town except when it comes to take-out food. We have Greek (House of) pizza, not Greek pizza and roast beef sandwiches and two Chinese places one town over. Anything else requires heating up when you get home.

In case you haven't figured it out by now we're trying to come up with supper and the choices are less than staggering. We decided on number two Chinese.....boring....(sigh).... banghead smiley

So what kind of take-out do you have in your area?

My 99-y/o mother says we should not call it 'take-out', but 'bring-in'. As in, "We won't have take-out; we'll have bring-in."

We are in no better shape in our little town: 2 pizza places(nothing to write home about), a not-great Chinese place(a good one would be exciting!), and... Subway? More than that is about half an hour away. That's to the east, only-go west, north, or south, and you've got about a 40 minute drive to anything at all. We are particularly into ethnic food so Mexican, Indian, Thai, etc. would be nice. Oh well, this drives me to cook more-Korean tacos tonight!

First world problem here, which of 50 Chinese restaurants? It makes it easier if you can narrow to Thai or Szechuan.

We have a great deli in town, cooks lots of good foods, and it's good that it is great because it's 12 and 19 miles to the nearest food otherwise.

I'm in NYC, so lots of choices. Can't afford to investigate most of them, though. The stuff closest to me that I pass by on my way home is not great.

These days I'm just grateful to see a restaurant that isn't part of some skeevy chain.

I'm sure I left a couple out I haven,t been in.

I live on the north side of Chicago (in the city) so I have pretty much anything I can imagine/want available for delivery until pretty late in the evening. Not 24/7 like NYC, but pretty good nonetheless.

According to GrubHub, which is a delivery service website, there are 438 restaurants that will deliver to me right now. And that is just those that are listed with them. Of course, the vast majority deliver pizza. smiling smiley

Metro population is 100k so not small town. We eat out twice a week and have no trouble finding a nice place. Most all will do take-out.

Pity me. I'm from New York and live in the South.

I'm 260 miles from the nearest real pizza.

Our village has a population of about 3,000 and has a fish and chip shop as well as a Chinese. We call them take aways. The two pubs also serve meals, day and evening. There are two pizza and kebab shops in the next village that will do free delivery.

We live in a decent sized city (by NC standards) of 250k so finding food isn't that hard. Where I grew up in the mountains of NC, OTOH. Population as of the last census puts it at 2,175. So finding anything even OPEN for dinner was hard.

Jack,

Are you talking "delivery" take-out or "you pick it up" take out? If delivery take out, then my area is just as bad. We have a couple of pizza joints, Chinese food and a burger joint. Beyond that, nobody else delivers. But, just about every restaurant will do take-out if we're willing to pick it up. But, therein lies the problem. At the end of the day, after a tough day of work, after you're all settled in for the night, who wants to run out and pickup dinner? Definitely not me.

What I do more often is stop at a local store on the way home and grab a rotisserie chicken. Combine that with some frozen or fresh veggies and dinner is served. Minimal fuss. Not much more expensive than buying fresh chicken and cooking it myself. Or, if I'm really lazy, taking a small can of pasta sauce, combine it with a handful of frozen meatballs and a side of frozen spinach. Nuke until done. Dinner is served.

Robert

If "boring" Chinese food is your only option. Instead of ordering the usual chicken and broccoli how about ordering something you've never had before? I mean there are what 50-ish things on the menu(?). There must be SOMETHING you've never had.

Lots of choices here. I live less than a mile from the Asian section of town (mostly Vietnamese). Probably at least 50 Asian restuarants within a couple of miles.

The big thing here, and in a lot of places these days is Food Trucks. Every weekend in the paper they list where all the big food truck events are going to be. The mall nearest us has one night during the week where about a dozen different trucks come. You can get almost any kind of food. Due to the high Hispanic population here, there are lots of Latin-themed trucks. Also lots of "Southern" food. The Korean BBQ truck is one of my favorites. There's also a French Crepe truck, a Scandanavian food truck, Italian food... you name it.

we have many choices, but I'm no fan of take-out bring-in.
Don't like congealed food in cheap sweaty tins.
Once in a while the new chicken joint or pizza when I don't feel like making it home.
We;'d rather cook.
Tonite - pasta and fresh shittakes w/pesto.
California figs are in, perhaps with some goat cheese and balsamic.

Who doesn't like getting the little bucket of rice from the Chinese place and marveling at how when you dump it out it expands to serve 50 people.

Fritz,

I'd rather cook, too. But, my wife comes home from work late in the evening and I don't want to start cooking dinner at 8:00 to 9:00 at night. Between cooking, eating and cleanup, we're not finishing dinner before 10:00 at night most nights of the week. By that time, on most nights, I don't want to have to deal with it anymore.

On the nights that we cook - four nights out of the week typically - I usually do the cooking since I'm home earlier than my wife and have everything just about on the table by the time she opens the door. Food is cooked. Everything used in the process of cooking is rinsed and ready to go in the dishwasher or already in the dishwasher. The only thing left to rinse and throw into the dishwasher is tableware and utensils.

mi esposa as well. 8P is early.

I do 95% of the cooking as well, though she is much mo better at it then I.
Most eves I clean up before bed. But summer time, I leave til the am ......... as long as the Queen or Princess isn't coming to visit .... again, as it's more important to leave time for chocolate.

Except many Saturdays. Home made pizza and reetas night. We get polluted as teenagers and everything else can go screw.

Have you seen the price of 'alibut lately?!?! Cheaper to fill the gas tank.

Robert M: Here take-out encompasses ALL my in town choices. Dunkin Donuts, House of Pizza, DeLeo's Pizza, a very small grocery store with no meat or cold cuts and a roast beef sandwich joint within range. There is NO delivery of food available to me.

3d: by "boring" Chinese food I mean how many times can you eat the same food without the experience becoming dull? Chicken and broccoli from 3 different restaurants is still chicken and broccoli. I've lived here for 30 years, I know the menu's by heart. There is nothing new on them.

To get anything different requires at least 5 miles travel to either a chain or sit down restaurant. It's not like I'm in the middle of the forest but pickins are slim in these parts.

We tend to cook every night and dine out/take out only once or twice a month so Chinese or subs every time doesn't cut it. I'd love to have the ethnic variety that some of you have available. Oh, and food trucks? Around here that's when you see a big tractor trailer with Stop & Shop or McDonalds on the side!

This may be helpful Jack D

[en.wikipedia.org]

Roadkill cuisine is preparing and eating roadkill, animals hit by vehicles and found along roads.
It is a practice engaged in by a small subculture in the United States, Southern Canada, the United Kingdom and other Western countries as well as in other parts of the world. It is also a subject of humor and urban legend.
Large animals including deer, moose, bear and elk are frequently struck in some parts of the United States, as well as smaller animals such as armadillos, raccoons, skunks and birds. Fresh kill is preferred and worms are a concern, so the kill is typically well cooked. Advantages of the roadkill diet, apart from its low cost, are that the animals that roadkill scavengers eat are naturally high in vitamins and proteins with lean meat and little saturated fat, and generally free of additives and drugs.[1][2]
