On today of all days; an old British Society that needs ressurecting: Society of Beefsteaks!

Why today of all days? Why a BRITISH Society? Have a finally lost my marbles? (well, possibly, but that's irrelevant to the discussion...).

The Sublime Society of Beefsteaks.
Motto: Beef and Liberty!

The Sublime Society of Beef Steaks was established in 1735.

The Society last met, in it's original incarnation, in 1867. Here's a little more about it's history.

Of course, the tradition is carried on by a few...

The rule book is maybe a little over complicated... and that whole "no women" part? Needs rewriting...

I thought this afternoon I'd start my own tradition...
Eat Steak.
Celebrate Liberty.

"May Beef and Liberty Be Our Reward"

Happy Independence Day!

Oh, and that's a tasty sweet and sour carrot salad... and a Henry Weinhards Cherry Cream Soda.

Given my nom du plume, I have to jump in:
"Beefsteaks" are not an exclusively Brit thing; one of the best celebrations of them came in the form of an essay in the "New Yorker", later anthologized in the book "McSorley's Wonderful Saloon." And here it is:

I should note that my father threw one of the last real "Beefsteaks" in 1964, for certain select members of the New York maritime community. I believe that it held the record as the largest bill ever put on a Diner's Club card at McSorley's for quite some time.
