I still disagree with the discontinuation of the 17" MBP

They can squeeze all the pixels they want on a screen but it all can only fit within a 15" physical space. Maybe the 17" wasn't the best seller but what pro machine in anyone's lineup is? Bad decision IMHO.

Preaching to the choir here. I love my MBP 17 but when the new kit comes along (as per my various posts) I need to move on.

I still don't figure it; my thought is that they were looking to drive sales of the "like a dock" Thunderbolt Display (which is my setup). If you use your MBP 17 on the road, though, that's not a selling point. I don't (do much on the road work), so it's not as much an issue to me -- but when I do make the "downgrade", and am on vacation trying to eyeball some small spots on an InDesign layout, I'm sure I'm going to feel it.

PS: Newt, go away!

i too lament the 17" EOL
i have a 2010 model which Ive been upgrading with SSDs
to prolong the life. too bad, so sad. I like the large form portable.
it makes an impression to coworkers and customers when I whip it
out on assignment in the field. It definitely is a Pro machine.

For people that "work" on our Macs, there is a major functional value to having a 17" or even a 20" inch portable laptop. Especially for visual artists. Apple should farm out the machines they aren't interested in making but are still desired.

I'm not a prosumer but, I too, think there is a place for it in Apple's lineup.

Maybe Apple will bring it back with a retina display. That would be something to behold.

That's the thing, Apple's MacBook Pro line is no longer targeted at people who use them to "create" - they're for people who consume and/or regurgitate.

I love ya, Newt, but do you talk in anything but puns? Are you actually B.J. Hunnicut from M*A*S*H?

Back to the MBP; I would love for Apple to continue the line and had hoped that there'd be some kind of 11th hour call from the warden (as was sorta the case with the Mac Pro) but that's not going to happen. It's days are numbered.

I have one here and it does not get as much use as it should but when I need a big portable screen it sure is nice.

Bought it from a college kid in a really nice car who would not believe me that a hard drive swap does not have to cost $1000 as a Mac place told him.

I brought it home, swapped it for an older drive I had in a box and it was up and running. It's my back up laptop now.

I ordered my "Refurb" June 29, 2012 even though my "old" 17" MBP was still going strong. A year+ now; I had fantasy thoughts of an even bigger MBP (remember the 20" laptop [HP?] ) .

I was able to get a 2.5GHz model and have since maxed the RAM at 16GB.

Yes, the 17" MBP wasn't for everybody but, I can't believe Apple was losing money on it.

Bought a 17" i7 with a matt screen from Mac Mall this spring.
It replaced a 4 year old 17".
I tried to convince myself to like the 15"Retina Macbook.
But my vision has been going down hill since I turned 50 and I just couldn't read the 15" screen

I believe the decision to end the 17" based on low sales was also the reason they have stalled on the Mac Pro. Apple needs to reinforce the pro apps with pro machines.

If you want a "Pro" machine, why do you want a MBP? You can get a PC with a much faster GPU but you have to do without a Thunderbolt port.

I like Hacs, but for a portable machine I wouldn't want one. Things like sleep need to work perfectly. Plus none really have the finish of a MBP - I do like Apple's keyboards.

most PC laptops have off-center keys and trackpads, which drives me nuts.
