R(a)YF: Microsoft's Surface going the way of the Touchpad.. Prices falling
Posted by: cbelt3

"Microsoft is planning to cut the price of its Surface RT tablets. Sources familiar with Microsoft's Surface plans have revealed to The Verge that the price cut could occur as early as next week, with each model being cut by $150. Microsoft's move to cut prices on its Surface RT tablets follow slow sales, and efforts to sell the devices elsewhere at lower rates. The software maker recently launched an education program to sell the Surface RT to schools at $199, and it has been clearing stock of its devices at its Tech-Ed and Worldwide Partner conferences recently."

They're also getting close to a year old without updated hardware.

from the article:

Microsoft is expected to refresh its Surface Pro with a Haswell processor, and the company has been testing Surface devices with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 processor. We're told that Microsoft is also planning to reveal new accessories for its Surface devices, including a battery-equipped keyboard cover that it has hinted at previously.

They market Surface like they expect you to do work on it. That's no fun. Tablets are for consumption, not production.

I guess I'm the only one here who has (some) interest in a Surface. I haven't played with one yet but I like the concept (Window 8 w/touchscreen, keyboard).

I am not a Mac Fan Boy and will switch to a better mousetrap when one is invented. I'm not saying with all certainty that the Surface is "it" (in fact I hardly think it will be) but I try to keep an open mind to new things. Ideas in the Mac World are pretty stagnant right now, Job's passing sure has left us with a lot of new nothing (IMHO)...

When will they offer a free ZUNE with each Surface purchase. They still have those around don't they?

The Zune HD was very good hardware for the time.

I recommended the Surface Pro to someone at work because he needed a portable Windows compatible machine to access internal secure webpages with IE, which even the newest iPad can not do. The current Surface Pro is nearly equivalent to the first MBA except for battery life, and it can run OS X. The next version of the Surface Pro is supposed to be a Haswel based unit with 15% better performance and 50% better battery life.

I pretty much fit into the tablet for consuming and heavier duty machine for creating. I do not like the workflow on tablets. Trying to cram a Haswell in there won't make me want to buy a tablet and will probably raise the price.

the idea of an integrated keyboard, turning it into a quasi-serious machine is what I had hoped for when the iPad first was introduced. the issue with Surface is the OS, not the hardware. if they go to something people can really use (be it consumer or creator), then I do think sales will improve.

Note, the Surface RT price cut was the topic of the original post, the Pro costs more as it is a full x86 machine.

You mean the RT, right? The Pro is a full Windows computer.

I get what you mean about the iPad. It is still largely a big iPod touch, not quite a full computer replacement, posted as someone who owns an iPod touch, an iPad, and actual computers.

Instead of fighting the iPad's limitations, I simply keep an old netbook around in a supplemental role for portable computing. Or perhaps the iPad is the supplement? Whichever.

Surface Pro = Windows software will run on it.
Windows phone = Windows Phone OS will only run on it (i.e. like iOS does on iPhones) Not Google Android.

Surface RT only runs software designed for it. None of the above.
A reduced version of office and not enough other software for an under powered device.

Looks and smells like a soon to be discontinued piece of cheap unsupported hardware.

New hardware won't help the fact that it runs it's own OS.

At least Google and Apple have Apps. (programs)

That's the problem with Surface RT.

Surface Pro is by far more versatile. Still over priced in my opinion but at least you can run Windows programs. Can buy an Air about same money or a decent Windows laptop cheaper. That's why the RT won't make it.

Yeah, the RT seemed to be a weird hybrid. I actually thought it must share the app store with Windows Phone, i.e. RT is to Windows Phone as iPad is to iPhone. Was shocked things didn't work that way. The iPad can run phone/iPod touch only apps, iPad only apps or universal apps that natively support both. RT, not so much?

What niche was Microsoft trying to hit with RT?

The RT? What's the big selling point? Why not go Pro or go Windows Phone? Or other competing non Microsoft device for that matter?

I can't say for certain that things (in this case useable software) will not improve for the RT. I'm assuming MS knows of this shortcoming. Time will tell but the clock just started ticking...
