Just got the offer. Not anything close to top shelf service, but interesting. And unexpected.

3Mbps down, 768Kbps up max. Wired cable service, not over a wifi network. $15.00 a week or $45.00 a month. Start up cost $69.95 includes a self install kit with the modem and includes the first 30 days of service.

I pay $52/month and I get 20 down and 5 up. On top of that I pay $16 for TV; if I were to cancel the TV I would pay $62 for internet only. $45/month for 3 down does not sounds like a good deal if you stream amazon/netflix/hulu.

3 down is fine for streaming. that's what our DSL is, and we can stream just fine. Sure, there might be cases where you could stream in slightly better quality, but it's quite good as it is.

Yeah, the best Comcast deal in most markets seems to be the $60ish tier (no bundle pricing).

Last time I checked my Amazon HD streams were only 2500Kbps. 720p I think. Probably should double check now but that's what I remember. Streaming on 3 Mbps is fine until you get a couple streams going, you could still do two full quality SD streams (1200ish Kbps I think) from Amazon at 3 Mbps down. Not bad. Not getting concurrent HD streams of course.

yeah, for multiple streams 3 down is probably not a great solution. Luckily, at this point, all we need most of the time is one stream. Occasionally we'll have 2 going at once, but even then, we can deal with slightly lower quality video without an issue.

The thing about TV service is that it feels almost crippled without a DVR. So you can buy a TIVO for ~$200ish plus the $15.00 mo. for service, or shell out another ~$20.00 mo. to Comcast for their gear.

Sure, they have price promos that expire after a certain period, but I thought you could cancel any time.

I believe this is correct. I never had a "contract" with Comcast.

Also I am not sure how this is prepaid, you have to pay ahead of time like those cell phone plans?

Comcast is also trans fat, sodium and sugar free. They just like to use the marketing wherever they can.

I assumed that referred to other companies requiring contracts for some plans. I vaguely recall AT&T having some plans that involve a contract, but I could be wrong.

Almost. You pay for a week or a month at a time; from X date to Y date, use it or lose it. When that time is up, no more service till you buy another block of time. Unlike a prepaid cell phone where the minutes are only deducted when you're actually using the service.

Hmmm, $45/month for 3M/768K. I wonder if their Economy or Basic or whatever it's called (about the same speed) non-prepaid internet service cost less, more or the about the same.

I pay $60/mo plus taxes for 60Mbps down, 15 up. Double play with telephone.

I pay $35 a month for 1Mbps down and 128Kbps up. I don' see a problem with this.

$60/month is at least 15 up and 2 down. Probably better to pony up for the normal Internet tier.
