ebay question: Accept Paypal for local pickup?
Posted by: Buckeye_Sean
Date: August 31, 2006 07:03AM
A potential buyer wants to know if I will let him use Paypal for payment - even though he will be picking the item up locally. I'm guessing he wants to use a credit card. (I stated in the auction that I will only accept cash for local pickup.)

Any possible downside to this other than the fees I will be eating?

*BTW - he has good feedback - 300+ @ 99.2%

Have him pay. Check to ensure the money was wire-transferred to your account/paypal. Let him pick it up.

Yah, I float back and forth on this. I always prefer cash in person, but with high feedback like that, I might allow it. Have you talked with the person on the phone? Stress that you really prefer cash. I usually get it that way.

No, haven't talked to him yet. I know I'm really going to get nailed on the fees by using Paypal and possibly a credit card. I'm just trying to cover my bases since I'm accepting a payment online and he would be picking it up in person instead of shipping to his confirmed address. (Will paypal cover this type of transaction if something goes bad?)

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I just want to be sure if a problem crops up down the road.

You bring up a good point about protection through PayPal. IIRC, the PayPal buyer's protection only works if you can prove shipment (i.e. a tracking number or receipt from carrier). So in this case, if he were to pay for the item through eBay checkout, you would not be protected. You would have to send a request for funds through eBay as a "Goods, non auction payment" if you are concerned about problems in the future. And if it's a high dollar item (severl hundred), I would only accept cash or a business check.

Since you stated "cash only" for local pickups, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for the additional PayPal fees. If he wants to bend your rules, he should be willing to pay extra.

Yup, high dollar item - probably will go for over $800.00.

I think I'll just tell him the only way I could accept would be to ship this to him. I know it's silly since he only lives about 30 miles away - but I don't want to take the chance of eating the fees plus getting screwed at a later date with no recourse.

If he wants to pay for this with a credit card that's the only way I'll do it. If that pisses him off, so be it.

Any final thoughts?

Hehe, just heard back from him

He says; "What if I write you a receipt. I think I will call Paypal and discuss their policy with them."

Me; "If you can get it to me in writing from them that Paypal will accept your receipt in lieu of shipping this to you, I might go for it."

*Notice I used the word "might".

- Good luck with that fellow ebayer winking smiley

I'm with blusubaru on this one. I normally ask for cash and unless it's something
very large I prefer to meet them in a public place rather my home. You don't really
know what kind people they are. One other thing if it's a large amount of
cash get a cash marking pen, they're not cheap but they're worth it, peace of mind factor.

Ugh, in the meantime I've been back and forth with this person who is making every case that I allow them to bid.

I basically told him; "Look even with your great feedback etc. if you tell Paypal you didn't receive the item - I have no way to prove to them that you did. I'd be out the fees, the money and my mac."

I told him I guessed he is insisting on using paypal because he wants to pay with his credit card. I suggested that if he wants to use his credit card he should go to the bank and get a cash advance.

He pays the fees on that one - we both get what we want - end of story.

Gotta' luv ebay!

If he picks it up after paying by PayPal, you are sh-it out of luck he is does a PayPal chargeback.

No electronic proof of delivery, no Seller Protection. Case closed.

On an item of $800, too much risk, and the guy sounds like he's possibly up to tricks.

Even if he isn't, it's a risk.

One workaround is to let him pay by PayPal. Then ship him a brick in a box to his confirmed address with signature confirmation, so you have proof that you sent him something heavy.

THEN let him pick it up.

Some risk, but basically then you have covered yourself.

A brick wrapped in a note that says, "come pick it up at this place at this time".

Have him sign a receipt, get it notarized, take his picture, copy his driver's license, etc., then.

Ask for his first born as a deposit for the first 60 days until all PayPal protection policy is up.

LMAO guys!

No - definately not worth the risk. There are 38 other people who are watching this item so I know it will sell anyway.

BTW - I haven't heard back yet since I suggested he do a cash advance on his credit card.
(Probabaly was not too thrilled about that idea.)

F' em.

You could have 100 watchers, it means nothing. This is a big misperception.

Easy Otto, it's going to sell anyway - no reserve.

The point I was trying to make was that with him or without him, it will sell.

I wasn't saying it wouldn't, but MY point is people get all excited when they have a lot of "watchers", but in reality, this means very little.

Watchers are an indication of INTEREST in the item, but not necessarily of ENOUGH interest to bid... But the number of watchers can be instructive if you don't read too much into it.

And back to the question at hand...
I think the cash-advance idea is the best... solves your problem entirely.
Cash is king.

Even with his feedback, I'd be reluctant to "bend" your terms.

Good thing people can't see their OWN watch numbers.

I might be depressed.

(I mean the number of people INTERESTED IN ME)

Not good enough. PayPal requires online-viewable proof of delivery (with a sig for that amount of money). You could use your notarized receipt to file fraud charges if the buyer did a chargeback, but PayPal wouldn't care about it.

It's 45 days, not 60. And the expense of feeding the first-born might well outweigh the profit smiling smiley

Sorry but if it's got a 100 watchers there's about 99.9% chance it's going to do well.
That's coming from someone that has 3000+ positives.

BTW: TL is right about the Delivery Confirmation.
