This is a story of how some old, half barrels became a pond and home for Fish in a Barrel.

I hope you all enjoy this cool story and garden/landscaping idea . . . I love it ~!~

Our pond started out as a single, half wine barrel with a few plants in it, but standing water attracted mosquitoes. So we added some fish, then another barrel ... more fish ... we were hooked!

As we learned more about our half-barrel pond's ecosystem, we strived to imitate nature as closely as possible in an artificial environment. The result: the pond has become our sanctuary.

Route the water through another barrel filled with 1/2" river rock and you can grow anything you want in it without adding anything else (possible exception of chelated iron and maybe a few eggshells for calcium). The system is called Aquaponics and is both simple and great. The garden filters the water, the fish waste fertilizes the garden - very symbiotic.

I use two such systems - one large for vegetables (everything from mint to Papaya) that has space for 400 plants using a 350 gallon stock tank (filled with Tilapia an channel catfish) and another small one for a flower garden adjacent to my goldfish pond.

Your 90% of the way there now - give it a shot

Got some pic's of your system that you can and are willing to share Ombligo . . . ?
Sounds like an awesome eco friendly system.

I talked to a veteran of the Korean war who told me about a restaurant that had a chicken coop over a koi pond. The bottom of the chicken coop was wire mesh. The chickens fed the koi. I think they ran new water in constantly. Water was cheap there.

These are over a year old and don't show current growth (the papaya on the left side of the deep stock tank is now fully grown and producing fruit). It also does not show the fish tank which is nearby - a 300 gallon rubbermaid stock tank with a 110Lpm air pump and a utility pump to push the water to the stacks where it gravity feeds back to the fish. The tank is overstocked with 10 tilapia (15 yesterday, we harvested 5 for dinner) and 6 channel cats (about 5 lbs each).
