When I built my house 22 years ago, I hit more fingernails than seemed reasonable. I learned that after hitting a fingernail with a hammer I could dramatically reduce the pain and discoloration of fingernails by twisting a straight pin back and forth many times over the dark area. I'd finally go through the fingernail and let a bubble of blood out. You gotta be really careful toward the end of the twisting however!
