I was never under the impression that the case was a significant portion of the iPhone build cost. Seems like what's in the case costs a lot more.

What's else is going to be eliminated? Flash? RAM? Screen? CPU? Cellular Radio? Cameras? Battery?

An article in TidBits (http://tidbits.com/issue/1184) suggests that the fit on the 5 is so precise (a few microns!) that there is likely a high rejection rate on the cases, increasing their costs substantially. The plastic is apparently much more tolerant of "close enough" that will allow a lower cost for the same internals.

I don't know why people focus so tightly on the initial price of a smartphone.
The real cost is the monthly data charge.
Indeed, a more powerful smartphone pays the same obscene price for data, but may receive more value for the large expenditure.
