Tropical storm Flossie: Hawaii braces for first direct hit in 20 years
Tropical storm Flossie is weakening as it heads toward Hawaii, but its torrential rains could be 'life threatening.' It would be the first tropical cyclone to make landfall on the islands since 1992.

By Amanda Paulson, Staff writer / July 29, 2013

Hawaii was bracing for tropical storm Flossie Monday, even as the storm began to weaken.

According to the National Weather Service, the eye of the storm is headed directly for Maui and Oahu, with landfall expected Monday. Wind gusts could reach 60 miles per hour, but the greater threat is rain. Heavy rainfall could cause "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in the mountains."

The storm is expected to bring 6 to 10 inches of rain over Maui and the Big Island, with up to 15 inches possible in isolated locations, and 4 to 8 inches of rain over Oahu and Kauai, with isolated maximums of up to 12 inches possible.

Brother just got back from Oahu a couple of weeks ago - glad he didn't have to deal with this.

I just closed the windows, moved the trash can into the garage, cleaned up the lanai, moving and stacking chairs, turning tables upside down ... that sort of thing. We're supposed to get strong winds and lots of rain tonight but it doesn't look horrendous. We're going out to an early dinner to celebrate our 40th anniversary with friends from New Zealand. To heck with the storm!

Thanks very much for all the good wishes. We had a great dinner (Monchong pan fried with macadamia and herb crust) overlooking a relatively calm Kalapaki Bay. Just a little rain and wind so far but Kauai is yet to be hit. As Rudie indicated, the threats now are thunder and lightning storms with gusty wind and heavy rain. Flossie should be west of Kauai by noon tomorrow.

Hope it doesn't keep going to the Philippines!

Guessing it won't - it appears to be heading east, and PI is west of HI.

You're right, Rudie - my bad. I interpreted the graphic appearing earlier in the thread to indicate that the storm was moving in an easterly direction, but the text accompanying the graphic (which I didn't see earlier) seems to indicate the opposite.
