Mamiya had an 80mm f1.0 lens for their old manual 645 MF camera if I recall. It was pretty soft wide open, though, not so useful.

I'd imagine so. Depth of field at F4 on a 645 camera is similar to around F2 on a 35mm camera with lenses that have the same field of view.

I lusted after that Canon lens for a long time, but I was a little to young (thus poor) to afford it.

It was an 80mm F1.9 lens. Nice lens.

It was an 80mm F1.9 lens. Nice lens.

Still have Dad's NIkkor 50mm f1.2 lens. Looking into those is like looking into our kitten's eyes when she sees a cat toy. Dilated to see you !

I sold one of those lenses not long ago. Have regretted it since. The 50mm 1.4G that replaced it, though AF, isn't half the lens the 1.2 was.

Canon's original EF (autofocus) fast 50mm was f/1.0. The later, revised version is f/1.2.

Ultra fast lenses are kind of cool with an SLR because your image is brighter and the split image spot doesn't go dark on you in bad lighting.

If you want a bright viewfinder image with a rangefinder camera, get yourself a Leica. winking smiley

Less than 6 inches of DOF with an F1 lens for a subject that's 8 feet away...
