F/U FYI: Network Rack Cabinet that won't break the bank...

SO I was looking for an 8U network rack;
[forums.macresource.com]

Thanks to C(-)ris, I found one, but that one was frowned on by the head of maintenance (not being enclosed... not that our OLD "system" was enclosed... ), so I kept looking for other options.

I stumbled on this vendor...
[www.connectzone.com]

The "smaller" type cabinets that I'm looking at are a good $100-200 cheaper than most others I've seen.

Just got one today, and except for not coming with the KEY to the lock (vendor is sending one in the mail immediately...), it looks great.

Got a patch panel from Monoprice, and some patch cables... now I just have to find my punch-down tool, and get this thing screwed to the wall!

If you need a rack-cabinet, it might be worthwhile to check 'em out.

and then there's times when it's really better.

Paul,

Has the district you work for ever applied for E-rate funding for internal connections? You guys might qualify for up to 90% funding to update your cable plant and/or update your electronic network equipment and/or get wireless installed into your schools.

N-OS X;
Yup... Unfortunately, our district, on paper, is just a hair "too rich" to qualify for much under E-Rate. Which really sucks, because my counterpart at another school just qualified for 90% funding for a big load of network gear... and she gloats, just a little. smiley-music039

Even if we did qualify for more E-Rate funding, I'd try to get the best deals I can. I think it's genetic what with German and Scottish in my family tree.
Still, just ONCE, it would be nice just calling ONE vendor like CDWG, and saying "just ship the stuff" rather than spending hours at different vendor websites and eBay shaving another couple bucks off.

I DO have to say, I DID really like the look on the head of the County IT office's face when I told him about the 10 HP Procurve 2650's I got for $300, delivered... Not the newest and hottest, but ten switches to "upgrade" the campus from c.2002 to c.2006 for less than the cost of ONE of the switches he was recommending isn't too bad.
Not sure, but I think he was a TINY bit impressed (which is about all the impressed it's worth, really...).

Fortunately, the insurance should cover most of the repairs.. if not the minor upgrades I'm piggybacking on the job.

No offense intended, but it's hard to imagine Eureka being classified as being too rich for anything.

I find it curious that EUSD doesn't qualify for E-rate. My employer has as clients the two largest school districts in the state - neither has any difficulty qualifying for E-rate funding. I'm sure either one of them has annual funding that DWARVES your district's.

As an aside: that recently-announced deal between Apple and LAUSD to deploy $30 million worth of iPads into 47 LAUSD schools this year? My employer designed and installed the LAN/WLAN upgrades for approximately half of those schools. While the iPads were not purchased with E-rate funding, the LAN/WLAN upgrades were.

It is what it is.

Absolutely none taken.. it's not exactly a prospering area... and we're continually amazed ourselves when our numbers come out and we miss the cut. (we missed the 50% Erate "cut" by ONE student a couple years ago).

Well, that sucks. sad smiley

FWIW, even if you qualified at the 50% level, chances are slim that you would receive any funding - the SLD hasn't funded much below 85% in quite some time.

It is what it is.
