Sources for Acrylic Sheets?

Hey all,
Long story short, I'm making a coffee table out of an engine, and I finally need to top glass.

I have to cut holes in it, so glass is unacceptable.

I'm looking for an 18"x24"x.5" piece of acrylic, for what is hopefully a reasonable price(some places online have been north of $80 which is a little insane).

Anyone have any good go-to-sites? If I have to pay $80 for a piece of acrylic I will, but I feel like there's got to be someone cheaper out there!

I buy my acrylic at Home Depot and cut it to size as needed.

If you don't feel competent to cut it, you might get a local glass shop to cut some for you.

Get the thickest stuff you can find. It tends to warp over time.

Also, if you're drilling holes in it do so gradually. Start with the skinniest drill-bit you can and work your way up. Maybe do a few test holes on some scrap first. It can easily shatter.

Home Depot (and my local hardware store) only do 1/4, which is a bit more flexible than I want for a coffee table...thus the quest for something thicker online.

Port Plastics

Does it have to be acrylic? Check their clearance rack for deals.

chip-
Drilling in glass or acrylic offers similar challenges and opportunities. In both cases abrasives can be used in the place of classic 'drill bits' or hole saws. Note also that acrylics can be 'welded' and 'polished' with solvents. When it comes to tables, plastics have some significant disadvantages over thick plate glass. They UV darken. They are not as hard and thus scratch more easily. They have a much lower melting point, and suffer heat damage.

Of course plastics don't break as easily into nasty sharp bits when you drop 'em.

Have you considered casting it with liquid acrylic resin? It will cost about the same but you won't have to drill it.

You might consider using polycarbonate, AKA Lexan, which is not as prone to shattering as acrylic/Plexiglas. Costs more though.

I think pics are in order here!

Lexan isn't as clear as acrylic and it tends to discolor and show more scratches over time.

If this is something you plan on keeping for a while, I would strongly suggest going ahead and getting glass for the top. I think the plexi/acrylic will scratch too easily, and it will feel a lot flimsier than glass. There should be a glass shop locally that could cut the holes you need in the glass. Have you priced glass out?

I'd go with glass! And find someone to drill it and polish the edges. You can go thicker than acrylic, which'd match the feel of the engine better.

It'll look so much clearer and "purer" five years from now.

Lexan isn't as clear as acrylic and it tends to discolor and show more scratches over time.

Lexan is a brand name of General Electric's polycarbonite. It can be sourced with both a scratch resistant coating and a UV inhibiter. You don't want to get acetone or fingernail polish remover near it, coated or not. It is used in safety windows and safety eyewear as it is quite impact resistant.
It is usually quite a bit more expensive than acrylics.

Pictures will be in order, when I've got it sorted out! Don't worry.

I'll make some calls for glass and go from there. Thanks all!
