Cell for overseas question
Posted by: samintx

I want to buy a cell for someone overseas. All they need is the SIM for the country and phone co. they will be using, right? as long as I get a phone that is unlocked, not under contract.

I'm looking for an older razr or something like that. I love my razr. I notice the phones are listed unlocked INTERNATIONAL version and USA version. What is that?

As long as it's an unlocked GSM phone with international frequencies, yes. Be sure it's both GSM and unlocked before you buy, and check what frequencies the country you're sending it to uses (it's probably 900/1800, but better to check first than buy the wrong thing):

Get a $200 Nexus 4. It's a great deal on an excellent phone that will work anywhere.

Sometimes International phones will work fine in the USA, but the phone is not warrantied for this market. Sometimes the phone is warrantied for this market, so a USA model, but still works internationally. Sometimes the International phone doesn't have the correct bands for the USA market and vice versa. It just depends.

Yeah. $200! Great deal. Probably not the best camera and not cutting edge specs anymore, (even still, far from low end model), but a great deal for the price.

I'm traveling to Costa Rica tomorrow and taking my iPhone 4S. AT&T unlocked it for me last week (confirmed @ T-Mobile). I'll get a SIM card at the airport and have the APN codes ready to go as well to enable internet access as well.

sam, often the best bet is to buy it overseas and have it shipped to the person drop ship. I'd look into that possiblity if I was in your shoes.

You cannot use an unlocked cell phone in Japan without an alien registration card proving you live in Japan. Makes it troublesome.

As Will Collier said, check what band the phone needs to work in. In the US, it's 800/1900 MHz. In Europe, it's 900/1800 MHz.

I bought a GSM quad band Razor a few years ago (from a Craigslist seller) that I use when I travel overseas. It was originally TMobile, and the seller had it unlocked. I checked by putting in a SIM card from another carrier.

You should be able to find a quad band Razor on CL or eBay for under $50, and a new battery for under $10.
