I have basic FIOS internet, which IIRC is 25/15, they offer 50/25 for $10 extra a month. Anyone try it?

I'm on 15/5, and I got the same offer. But frankly I have no speed issues as it is, even with a Roku, so I am hesitant to spend the money.

I have it. Got talked into it when I ordered FIOS last year. I don't know if it's worth it for one person, but we have three laptop users in the house and one of them is also a gamer, so it may be worth it. I am also a heavy (ahem) downloader, so it may be worth it for us. However, now that I am retired, I may try to save the $120 a year.

I switched to their 50/25 service when I called them up to cancel the TV service. I was tired of paying $120/mo for services I didn't even really use, and the DVR at the time was total crap. I was getting 15/5, and they were able to switch me to just 50/25 internet for $79.99 a month (no taxes or fees!).

Spoiled? No. If you're getting less than 15/1 then you're actually not getting a standard package. You're stepping down to a more basic package that is slower than the one people normally order when they get cable modem service.

15/5 is the standard for cable modem speeds for Optimum Online from Cablevision. I wasn't able to find a slower level of service on their site. It may exist but if it does, it likely a special request.

The standard speed for Timewarner in the five boroughs is 15/1. If your speeds are lower than 15/1 then it isn't standard Timewarner access. You've dropped a level or two to their basic or lite package.

Standard service from Comcast is 20 down. I can't find the upload speed. Their Performance Starter - a step slower is 6 down. I suspect the average subscriber doesn't go for Performance Starter.

FWIW, I had 15/5 Optimum Online in my old apartment and it got the job done. My office has 15/5 and it gets the job done. However, in our old place, my wife and I switched to FIOS when it became available and our package included 25/25. It was a noticeable improvement, especially for streaming video.

In our new place has 50/25. The difference is tangible, just as it was when we moved from 15/5 to 25/5. But, it's _very_ noticeable when comparing the speed at home and the speed at the office. I wouldn't choose 15/5 now, though. I'd spend the extra bucks for at least 25/25 (or 25/15). If that wasn't the option, I'd definitely go for at least 50/25.

One of the reasons I want the faster speeds on both the download and the upload is because I have encrypted backups being sent from various locations to the server in my apartment.. Same goes for backups being sent from my apartment to other locations. This alone makes it worth the extra bucks for faster access.

I think I actually have 15/5, I was considering the upgrade for streaming only as I plan to drop TV and phone.

I do, on occasion miss FiOS, but the 15/5 that DolanVision offers has been fine. I upload client refs a lot to DB. Seems to go reasonably fast an not interrupt my work flow.
FiOS just got way out of hand for the price. I was up at $160/mo for basic cable plus phone and interwebs.
CableVision is under $100 for an equally crappy DVR and basic.
I'd dump the TV but for one show my wife likes that hasn't become web available.
And she hasn't watched one of the 10 eps on the DVR this season.
Work keeps getting in the way of fun.

I get the upload advantage, but streaming video should be pretty good with 15 down. Most streams from services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu are less than 4000 Kbps so even three simultaneous HD streams should be pretty solid.

It's decent at the lower speed. Doable no doubt. But, given the choice, it's definitely smoother with the faster speeds. Bear in mind, this isn't taking into consideration the other machines in the household as well as the server which has activity taking place 24/7.

Case in point... I watch content via Netflix streaming pretty often - I'm trying to catch up on many seasons of Supernatural and several other shows - lol! But, while I'm watching content via netflix, my wife could be browsing the web, streaming video and such on her HP laptop. And, I'll have inbound backups from the computers at my office and those owned by my parents and siblings downloading via the Internet from their locations into the media/backup server. All happening simultaneously.

Definitely solid reasons for faster access.

Its not so much the 15mb down that i'm interested in but 5mb up.
