Dissappointed in Apple's new products

Granted I wasn't expecting much, and there's not really anything I need at the moment-- but still-- what a yawner. I'm barely even motivated to find out more about any of the products.

I agree with Black, so far I'm not terribly impressed. The 5C seems to be a cheaper iPhone 5 with colors. I suppose brand enthusiasts can't talk crap about plastic anymore. So there is some upside. A likely $550 price point for the plastic 5C.

I'm sure many would prefer Apple had continued the old iPhone 5 at that same price point. Lot of metal phone fans, although, I personally don't mind a high quality plastic either.

Plastic, metal, glass, whatever. For us, it's going in a case so what matters is what that's made of…

I'm excited about the fingerprint sensor. I hate typing in my lengthy iTunes password. Just think about how much more money I'll be spending in the iTunes/App store now that it's easier to make purchases. Oh, wait...

Yeah, but the likely $550 premium priced 5C is plastic. Surely you've seen comments about how other phones (code for Samsung) are not premium because they use cheap plastic?

Let me ask you, if Apple asked you whether you wanted the 5 or 5C for the same price, what would you choose, assuming the specs are indeed the same?

Normally, I don't mind the material, assuming the construction is solid, but I did think the 3G and 3GS looked like cheaper products than the original metal backed iPhone. To be fair, part of that was the design choice of Apple, not an inherent limitation of the material. As a counter example, I still think the plastic Nokia N9 is one of the most beautiful phones I've even seen. Then again, I love the aluminum Nokia N8 as well.

It looks like all the 5C 'Phones are plastic.

I felt the 3GS felt a little cheap, but I think the design of the 5C is nicer and I really like the yellow version. I'll have to see it at the Store, but I think that it won't feel particularly cheap unless you just don't like plastic.

It will scratch, though. Clear protection would be a must for me.

Agreed.

Looking at [www.apple.com] , I think this won't look or feel cheap at all.

I'm not entirely sure I like the new colors. They remind me too much of something else...

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Yes. That was my point. The 5C is priced like a flagship, but switched from metal to plastic. Thank you for the clarification. I didn't explain my point well enough to avoid confusion.

I'm probably going to buy a 5S, in part because I'm already paying the crappy subsidized price by being on contract.

But the 5S is really just:

1) faster processor than 5

2) better camera

3) fingerprint scanner

No better battery life. Even though Siri seems like it's still a beta product, that was a pretty innovative addition when the 4S was released.

'Just' a typical stay-the-course incremental make-the-best-selling-phone-better iPhone 'S' upgrade.

Lumia/Asha line has been pushing these colors for a little while now. Shoot even the N9 had some of those color options.

Hey, that's fair. ;)

I will offer but a small defense. My fanboyishness didn't wear off until late 2010 into 2011. Pretty good flag waving run for just over a decade. While a Mac user/owner prior, I didn't get the fever until I bought a 2000 G3 iMac.

In the current market? I'd say at least $400, definitely $500. We can split the difference and say $450 and up. As a counterpoint, my mom is unhappy with anything north of $100.

Huh? I own so many Apple devices it probably rivals many of the more fanish members of the forum. Sure, I have started clearing out old Apple products and no, I'm not necessarily replenishing those devices with newer Apple branded replacements, but I've still been an Apple user for over 20 years. Today, I've typed all my posts on this forum from Apple devices. Some hater, eh?

If you must know, I don't particularly like most of the bigger companies in tech. My opinion of Apple didn't fully sour until the IP shenanigans. Likewise, you should ask my opinion of Nokia some time, even as as former long time user, it isn't particularly pretty. Even so, there are still some positives when discussing the products themselves. Same with Apple and even, although loathe to admit, Microsoft.

Here's the question I have for those looking for a major new Apple product:

1) How many REALLY good products do you expect a single company to make? Here's the comparison: how many different kinds of car do you expect a car company to make (compact, sedan, SUV, pickup truck)? That's like 4, or 5, total. Each new model of car takes $1B in new investment.

2) I bet we are approaching the point where it's $1B to design the next CPU for an iPhone, plus all of the specialty components.

Maybe what we should really be expecting is a quality phone line up, tablet, tablet, and desktop.

Period.

Apple TV, iWatch, and the rest are all exactly that - supporting products.

I changed my mind about today's new phones when my wife said "Well, if the C is only $99, I might get one."

(My wife has vehemently hated iPhones, while fanatically hanging on to her flip-phone. And claiming her daughter and husband are 'foolish' for spending money on a phone. Man, if I tell her the 4s is free...)
