our iPad got at Christmas is still in pristine condition, and our kids abuse it. Wife also got an iPhone at Christmas, and I got an iPhone in May, and so far both are also pristine. I avoid putting anything else in the same pocket with iPhone. I recently got those Xtreme guard at 85% off which means I paid $1.50 for 2 iPhone screen protectors, but I haven't bothered to install them yet. Maybe I should not bother. someone posted a few days ago a link to some tempered glass that seemed even more interesting (easier to apply) than those screen protectors. Maybe I spend $29 and get one of those to try, on the other and once again I wonder if I need it.

I have screen protectors on all of my iOS devices and while I'm confident that they have guarded against minor abrasions as well, in at least one case I'm pretty sure that the screen protector saved me from getting a deep and ugly scratch or even shattering the screen when I dropped my phone on asphalt.

The screen protector was shredded along the edge that struck the pavement, along with the aluminum edge of my phone. The glass was unharmed.

No screen protector on my Touch, but I am very careful to keep it alone in its pants pocket. I do have it in one of those simple, clear silicone form-fitting cases that does not cover the screen, which has enough lip to keep the screen off flat surfaces and absorb the odd bump. I think the bump absorption thing is important, as I've seen several broken phone screens that look like side-impact damage.

I've never used a screen protector on my iPhones or iPads. They have gotten a few scratches, I think, but they are only visible when the iDevice is off. They don't in any way seem to interfere with the use of the device.

I do not think a thin plastic screen protector is going to help with scratches on a Gorilla glass panel.

And they block the oleophobic coating Apple installs to help with fingerprints.

So no, no screen protectors since Apple started coating their iOS devices.

I've not used any screen protectors on anything since I used them on Palm IIIx's years ago. I finally decided they were more trouble than they were worth. I've not scratched any glass-fronted device yet.

The orig iPhone lacked the oleo whatever coating and showed fingerprints but was still Gorilla. I finally drooped my iP4 this summer. Fell out of the bike bag onto the street. A tiny portion of the glass edge got scratched along with a little of metal chassis.

If I ever am reliably in an environment where a fall could be imminent or particularly harsh I'll find a way to tether it first instead.

not on my current 5, IP3 or the 4 i kept pristine for 2 years. actually, i did have a protector on the 4 for a time. it got crappy looking so i removed it. after a while i realized i hadn't needed it in the first place.

Heck yeah. One of my old Touches, I had a screen protector on it but it got janky so I took it off, intending to replace it. I didn't, not right away. The screen got a couple scratches before I put on a new protector.

I read that Steve wouldn't allow them in the Apple Store because they aren't needed. The new glass is that good.
I've never used one on my iPad 1 or iPad 3 and no scratches at all.
A plastic cover must make the screen at least a little less responsive, I figure.

Same here. And my white SwitchEasy Colors case still looks new after 3 years.

My son kept his 4 in his pocket along with his coins, etc. lots of light scratches and a couple of deeper ones. None visible when the phone is on. I kept mine in my shirt pocket and it stayed scratchless.
