I think the MotoX is a nice-sized mid-sized screen.

I would like an iPhone with that basic form factor.

If I were looking for a larger phone, I would go look into a Galaxy Note 3.

Alternatively, an iPad mini can fit in many pockets and most purses.

Galaxy S4, Note 3 or HTC One. I'm hoping the iPhone 6 will bump up the screen size.

What are the top 21 features out of 40 that define best for you? I have been trying to convince myself not to buy a HTC One.

I'm hoping the iPhone 6 will bump up the screen size.

I'm betting that it will, but I don't want the 'Phone to be any bigger, just use more of the glass that's already there.

An iPad mini with cellular and a headset could be viable as a big phone, and you wouldn't be tempted to hold the monster to your head. You'd always need a headset though, unless the mini will do speakerphone as well.

People have gotten past that embarrassment. Right up to the ear. It looks normal now.

Oh a Mini with a phone in it? Apple probably couldn't make enough of them to handle the demand.

Jimmy Kimmel Live did a 'man in the street' segment asking people how they liked the new iPhone but giving them an iPad Mini instead.

People have gotten past that embarrassment.

I'm not concerned about embarrassment. I've never been one to worry about the "They look like dorks" syndrome.

The 5/5s is as big of a phone that I want to hold in my hand much less up to my head. As it is, I use the 4s on BT most of the time. It allows me to keep the 'Phone in my pocket.

The only downside that occurs to me is the need for a bigger pocket when not wearing a jacket.

Have you looked at anything else? how big is too big? How small is too small?

Honestly, this seems like a question only you can answer.

Huawei Ascend Mate is supposed to be decent, but $425+ for a phone that's been out for six months and is fairly big with a 6.1" screen. Probably not for everyone.

Edit: Wait, are we talking contract or contract free devices? What carrier?

I'm due for an upgrade from my old iPhone 4 and not sure what I'll get but I never thought the large phones looked "dorky"

However, the big Bluetooth headsets - now that's another story:

"When people first started wearing Bluetooth headsets, they often looked Borg-like"

With Sprint now, but despite their claims of new service, mine seems to be worse than ever, just plain slow.

May switch carriers. I had and Evo HTC and it was a great browsing phone. I was able to browse easily. I want to be able to use real estate program FUSION for the FMLS on it to quick look up info if I don't have my iPad.

Thinking about getting a MBA eventually.

The 4S can't benefit from Sprint's LTE, it's 3G only. CDMA is pretty slow.

I went from the iPhone 4 to the Galaxy S4 on my last upgrade. I love the size of the screen, I hated browsing the internet on my iPhone, the S4 also has an amazing camera. Also...Android Jelly Bean made the phone fun to use again. I held on to my old phone for a couple of months just in case I didn't like the S4, but I eventually sold it.

The 4S has a 3.5" screen, I believe, so pretty much any mid to high end phone will have a bigger screen at this point.

decocritter,
How big is larger phone for you? 4.5"? 5"? 6"? Carrier choice, desired screen size, and budget will help narrow down the selection for you.

There may be a hint here: "During launch day on September 20, Gazelle made five offers per second between 10 and 11 AM ET. That's a whopping 18,000 people in that hour who decided to trade in their existing phone for cash to use on a new iPhone."

[tech.fortune.cnn.com]

FORTUNE -- Gazelle, those guys in orange hoodies who pay cash for used smartphones, reported a sharp uptick in traffic Friday, the first day customers for the iPhone 5S could lock in the price of their old devices.

Specifically:

Trade-ins were up four-fold Friday morning compared with the iPhone 5 launch last year
Between 10 and 11am Eastern, Gazelle's electronic trading desk recorded as many as five offers per second
The average value per trade-in was $50 higher than last year, thanks to the large numbers of new-model smartphones that came in (iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4).
Samsung offers were up 70% from last month. Samsung was the most popular non Apple (AAPL) brand traded in by factor of three.

taking from that, no matter how many phones were quoted for trade-in at Gazelle, Samsung was 3x more than Apple.

1,000 iPhones, 3,000 Samsungs
10,000 iPhones, 30,000 Samsungs
100,000 iPhones, 300,000 Samsungs

And they all had Samsung phones? If they know the percentages then they know the actual number out of that 18,000. Why be vague?

Samsung was the most popular non Apple (AAPL) brand traded in by factor of three.

taking from that, no matter how many phones were quoted for trade-in at Gazelle, Samsung was 3x more than Apple.

1,000 iPhones, 3,000 Samsungs
10,000 iPhones, 30,000 Samsungs
100,000 iPhones, 300,000 Samsungs

Wait, not to be pedantic, but I came to a different conclusion from the same sentence. I took away that of non Apple iPhones traded in, Samsung was the most popular by a factor of three, not necessarily there were three times as many Samsung phones than iPhones traded in. Am I misreading? If so, then I apologize a head of time. Otherwise, either that sentence is miswritten and you are still correct about, or perhaps you had a minor misunderstanding.

Edit: I suppose my point is how many iPhones were traded in and how does that number compare to non iPhones? That was not covered by your posted link. Again, basing my questions on my interpretation of the quoted text.
