FireWire 800 port on 24" iMac!

Wow!
Pushes it in to the professional realm.
I have at least four clients that have been wishing for this form factor with FW800, the 3GB of RAM, faster CPU. and the massive 24" screen is just gravy!
Really nice.
I guess those "FireWire is Dead!" folks were wrong.

So FW800 is working now, or people just like the idea of it? Or was it (still is?) just a problem with G5s?

Only the early G5 tower problem, along with the horrible SATA controller implementation.

Hmmmm... I should check again, but I'd swear the speed of a FW800 drive on my next-to-last gen G5 (Dual 2.5) was indistinguishable from FW400.

That is what a good tech friend told me, that the last G5's fixed it. I did not check personally.
But "next-to-last gen G5 (Dual 2.5)" is earlier than the last!

Yeah, but originally you said "Only the early G5 tower problem, along with the horrible SATA controller implementation."

That makes it sounds like it was fixed well before the last rev. There was only rev of the "last" G5's (eg, the DDR2 mobos.)

What I wrote, and what you perceived I wrote, are two different things.
Didn't "Sound" that way to me, since this is not a "Tech Forum", I assumed looser statements could be used, next time I will turn on my Atomic Clock!
Sorry I upset you!

I was being nice about things. What you originally wrote and what you later wrote contradict each other. You changed your statement because someone pointed out it wasn't accurate.

ear·ly (ûrl) Pronunciation Key

Of or occurring near the beginning of a given series

This would not include the next-to-last rev of the G5's. Why is this important? Because you originally wrote Only the early G5 tower problem, along with the horrible SATA controller implementation.

But don't get too down about it, you're probably ESL.

And, to correct myself, my Dual 2.5 is actually the next-to-last SINGLE CORE G5 model... Franx's (2.7) is the REAL next-to-last gen G5 tower (if anyone cares).

Darn happy to see that on there for sure.... Still annoying that it's not even an option and no way to add it to the 20" models.

Whatever works, right?

FireWire, one of Apple's own creations, at least hasn't been cast aside yet.... to join the ranks of such as held by the ADC displays, etc.

Happy to see it though I am note how many use it. I like using mine, faster transfers on correctly equipped gear.

That may be a huge understatement, at least if comparing FireWire to USB 2.0:

For digital video, only firewire can assure no dropped frames import/export. Or maybe my thinking is elderly.

Depending on who you are trying to insult, that statement can also be racial slur.

So get a FW800 PCI card. Problem solved.

This may or may not be strictly a "tech forum", but there are plenty of nerdy people who hang out here (I should probably included myself in this category to some degree) and nerds do tend to be pedants and sticklers for details, so it pays to be precise. To me, "Early" most likely means "Rev 1 G5", not "All non-multi-core G5s"

Now if only Apple would get on the stick and put FW800 back on the 15" MacBook Pro. sad smiley

Nope, I just said that in case you were ESL, I wouldn't want you to worry about the mistake you made.

Really? Having seen many troubles with FW400 hubs and PCI cards (from deep sleep insomnia to FCP-related kernel panics, I'd be surprised (but pleasantly so).

you are still 100% correct. USB uses processor clock cycles to run it (AFAIK) and FW is independant of the processor, the FW chip does it all.

That is why even 604e processor macs a decade ago could do .DV editing.

But no 604e Macs shipped with built-in Firewire. And I forget how much Firewire PCI cards went for back then, but I presume they weren't cheap...

The 604e was a sweeeeeet processor. The G3 was supposed to be the processor for low-end/midrange machines and cost less to manufacture than the 604s did; their unexpectedly high level of performance took Apple by surprise and led to a fairly radical rethinking of their product line back in 1997.
