anyone here affected by Shutdown?

I have 2 close friends and 2 acquaintances who are on furlough since yesterday.

EDIT: thinking about it, there is a 5th guy who is affected, he left our company and went to work for the Army

take some $ out of bank, pay a few bills late and wait to get your back pay in a few weeks. A lot better than being unemployed.

A sister works for the FDA as a chemist. I have not talked with her yet, but I suspect she is on furlough. She was furloughed the last time we had a shutdown, her Christmas presents for nieces and nephews were a bit restricted that December.

P.S. It was not a paid vacation the last time, so I don't know where you get that assumption.

I have many scientific colleagues who are literally locked out of their labs, with armed guards standing at the building entrances and exits. They are not even ALLOWED to volunteer their time to keep key experiments running.

This was disastrous on labs under Newt's Shutdown, it's even worse under today's.

My sister in the Forest Service is furloughed, but they have been notified that they are officially 'unemployed'.

If the shutdown goes beyond 4 weeks, they are eligible for unemployment benefits.

I do not think there will be back pay.

Please do not think of this as paid vacation. For the overwhelming number of government employees, this is a nightmare.

she says:

Congress would basically have to enact a statute to allow us to be paid. If that's the case, then I'd have to repay any unemployment I get. It isn't a guarantee, though, and it's hard to say if Congress would go for paying feds after all of this.

I have four friends locally who are on furlough; they are civilian employees who do simulation software design at the AF base. Another just got back from 18 months in Afghanistan; repairing Apache helicopters. He's out of work now.

I have another friend who works for the National Park Service; she's furloughed too.

My work is affected because the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division website is down, and another project I'm on will be delayed because it requires photos from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. That's on a printing deadline that will be missed if the shutdown goes on very long.

slbett, you idiot: furloughed workers do not get back pay unless a bill authorizing that is passed by Congress. Fat chance of that. And a lot of these workers do not have the luxury of money in the bank or the ability to blow off paying bills; they are not congressmen after all.

Wow that was rude. Guess you've never been furloughed before. It's leave w/o pay. As a non-fed gov't worker, I had to suffer through a number of furloughs and paycuts during the recession. Yeah, I was always glad to keep my job, but it still sucked. It's certainly nothing I would wish on anyone.

In addition to the terrible outcome of the shutdown, the practical impact of the Sequester is the loss of three jobs in my work unit.

The bottom line, regardless of which party you support, is that we need our government to be working effectively for our country to run smoothly.

In the meantime, my heart goes out to all of the government employees and their families that have to suffer over this political temper tantrum.

the agency I deal with is shut down and is holding some of the grant funding we deal with until bodies can return to input the data. so, yes, I am affected but not personally.

Yeah. A friend with the IRS who cares about what he does. He was instructed NOT to work at home.

And, yes, it is painful. He and his family will be making some difficult decisions if this does not clear up real soon!

Not personally, not yet. We have plans to visit Mt Rushmore this month, so we'll see.

A good friend works for NOAA. This furlough isn't a vacation; she doesn't know how long it will be or whether she'll get paid. And if she's furloughed for two weeks, she'll have two weeks' worth of work to catch up on when they go back to work.

Excepted employee here, which means I get to work but no pay for now. At least I'm guaranteed to get retroactive pay once the shutdown ends. We still don't know if we get a partial paycheck next Friday since the lapse came mid pay period and spanned the fiscal year.

Washington state's WIC program only has 9 days of operating funds left, Head Start programs may have to shut down and NIH can't enroll new patients in clinical studies. Consider yourself lucky if you're not directly effected.

Keep in mind that furloughs will keep millions of dollars out of state and local economies. People's credit ratings will take a hit. Other than that, no big deal.

My brother is on the US Marshals task force here in town. He was headed to training this weekend but it was canceled due to the shutdown. A lot of what he does is tied to the Marshal service so no telling how that will be affected. The Marshals he works with are also all not getting paid. So basically working for free. Fortunately he's still technically a state employee so he's no directly affected.

I do feel bad when this happens to anyone, but it is a bit nice to see the civil servants see what it's like in the private sector. My friends all work for various federal agencies. They make fun of my craptastic benefits all the time. While I've never been furloughed, I've had to cover for others who were. It sucks. My boss was furloughed. I had to do his job and mine and two others as well for two weeks. During that time my vacation was cancelled and expired, so I lost a week of vacation time. He had two weeks off when no one was allowed to contact him from work and he collected unemployment. I would have traded places with him in a heartbeat to have two weeks of honest vacation.

Here's some straight scoop:

During the government shutdown, the Department of Defense will have no legal authority to pay any personnel - military or civilian - for the days during which the government is shut down. The shutdown will not affect payments to retirees and annuitants as those funds come from a retirement trust fund. Below is the effect the government shutdown will have on active duty military, civilian personnel, retirees and annuitants, and DoD contractors.

Military: Active, Reserve, and National Guard members will be paid on time for pay entitlements earned September 30 or earlier. Military members cannot be paid for duty performed after the expiration of the current CRA on September 30. Once another CRA or an appropriations act is signed into law, normal disbursement of military pay will resume.

Civilians: All civilian employees will be paid on their normal pay date for all entitlements earned through September 30. After September 30, the following rules apply:

Excepted employees who perform duty during the shutdown will be entitled to retroactive payments once another CRA or an appropriations act is signed into law.
For furloughed employees, Congress will have to provide authority for retroactive payments to be made.
Employees whose organizations have available resources such as Defense Working Capital Fund, will be paid as normal until such time as cash reserves are exhausted.
Non Appropriate Fund (NAF) civilian employees: Your pay will be processed and paid as normal.

Retirees: Military retirees and annuitants are not paid from Continuing Resolution Act (CRA) appropriations, so those payments will continue as scheduled.

DoD Contractors: As a revolving fund organization, so long as the Department's Working Capital Fund has adequate funds for normal operations, DFAS will continue to make contract and vendor payments.

The last time govt. workers got back pay. Already a bill proposed in the house to give workers back pay this time. How many of the rest of us could get paid for not working?

I repeat, still a vacation IF you get paid.

Now, how many govt. workers have taken pay cuts or been reduced to part time like so many of the rest of the private sector have had to take. Government employment is up and the rest is down. My work is down by at least 30%. So I must live on 70% or less of my past income for the last 4 or 5 years. Surely these people can get by a few weeks until they get their back pay.

Affordable Care Act and balancing the budget should apply to everyone including govt. workers and Congress.

Nothing idiotic about that. Just saying that no one group deserves special treatment.

No, the last time the furloughed workers did not get back pay. Only the ones who were required to work without pay, got that as back pay. As I mentioned, my sister was furloughed the last time and she never got any back pay. Even then the amount paid to those who did work did not include any interest for the free "loan" of their time. So whoever told you that everyone got back pay was wrong.

As for the proposed bill, that's nice, but what is its actual language and chance of being passed?

I am talking govt. worker, one who is paid directly by some sort of tax payers money. As article in link below says, they got paid. If someone happened to work for a company that had a government contract, then someone might not have gotten paid. Also includes businesses that rely on those workers such as restaurants and such. I happen to work in the housing industry. Interest rates and foreclosures directly effect this industry with no chance of getting any lost income. Pay for staying home equals vacation pay. No bill to get back income (pay) for me. In the private sector, no work no pay, period. Yet the govt. worker has a good chance to get his back pay.

My sister is not a contract worker, she works for the FDA and has for about 25 years. Contrary to that article, she did not get paid for the furlough time back in '95. It was an unpaid vacation.
