You can include me as well.

I detest what has happened here over the past 10-15 years. It's turning into the burbs. Block after block consisting of bank branch, crappy food franchise, drug store chain, with maybe something ridiculous like a "nail spa" thrown in.

There's a stinkin' 7-11 trying to open in my neighborhood. We need a cap on garbage chains.

When I was in London recently I found the same thing - all those little tiny shops and family owned bistros are almost all gone - replaced with chains that offer premade meals and sandwiches in cellophane and plastic bowls likely made across the Channel in France or godknowswhere not unlike the same fare offered up coach/steerage on Delta.
Sad to see life and living become so corporatized.

Nice work!
Some of that can still be seen on the lower East Side, but gentrification is slowly making its inroads, alas.

Gentrification or the expansion of Chinatown. When I first lived in NYC, Essex, Orchard, etc. were predominantly filled with Jewish businesses, including at least a block of pickle merchants on Essex. Nearly all Chinese now.

Small businesses are closing because the rents, depression or not, have continued to rise steadily over the years. (That's one of the reasons banks have so many storefronts, they can afford the much higher rents. Same goes for well-financed chain stores.

New York real estate owners are animals. The neighborhoods are the big losers.

Indeed. It's no wonder that banks charge the kinds of fees that they do when they are blowing insane amounts of money on excessive numbers of large prime retail spaces. I'm no fan of Bank of America, but their locations are much more sensible: many are just small locations for ATMs. Capital Bank opened a branch in my area within the past two years, in a new "luxury" building at 3rd and 14th. Big retail space. They put up a banner when they opened along the lines of "At last, a Capital branch in the East Village! Rejoice!" This branch only has one or two ATMs, and they put them OUTSIDE, on the street. Apparently they feel that putting their customers in harm's way is part of the East Village Capital Bank experience. Or perhaps they aren't liable for robberies occurring outside their premises.

We support a very large group of real estate industry parasites here. Aside from the big owners: when I first lived here, you could rent an apartment without giving thousands to some leech of a broker. Now it's all but impossible.
