I just trimmed my safari cookie collection to names I recognize, like
alaskaair.com
apple.com

Prefs are set "Block cookies from third parties and advertisers", but obviously it's not working. A lot of spyware and adware cookies get through.

I wish there was a better screening option to take out things like
crwdcntrl and imwx, etc.

Have you tried DNT+ or Ghostery?

While these are more for Trackers than Cookies, I think you'd want to block these as well. I use Ghostery with FF.
