time for router update ?

will updating my 5 year old Belkin 802b to a Linksys WRT54G get me anything to speak of?
My wifes windoze is wireless as is my G4 pbook. But I seldom if ever transfer files between computers of any significant size.
My security seems to be OK judging from the log.

If your powerbook and your wife's laptop are using 802.11b, then you won't get any speed increase or improved security by going to a 802.11g router.

If you do have 802.11g capability in the laptops, but all you do is surf the internet, you won't see any increase there either.

You might gain some abilities in the router's firewall though.

You'll probably gain the ability to encrypt your network with WPA, which is a lot better than the old, easily-breakable WEP.

You only get WPA if the clients are 802.11g as well.

Untrue. One of the Airport updates along the way sometime in Panther added WPA support for the original Airport cards/802.11b. Both my old iBook G3 and Pismo connected to my LAN with WPA encryption.

Fritz,

You may gain some new features but overall, you'll not notice a difference. One thing to take into consideration is range. The range of 802.11g routers is awful. Seriously awful. If you're going to spend the money, then you may want to jump to a pre-n router. But, my advice is to stick with your existing model, especialyl if it works well. It's a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of situation.

I was not aware of that. Thanks for the info. Seems it is up to the manufacturer to update the firmware on the older cards to support it.

And if you leave it 'open' you'll be just like everyone else in your 'hood with "Linksys" as your SID, default admin password, and all that jazz.

.. just sitting there, waiting to be ownzed by some kid with a Pringles Cantenna.
