Why is AirPlay so flakey?

I really like it when it works.

But many times it messes up video and/or audio. Usually the audio will fail first serving up content from my MBP to AppleTV 3 to the TV. To fix it have have to relaunch Safari and/or restart the ATV.

"It just works?" I hope it will come true.

I haven't found it to be particularly flakey but occasionally, it fails to cut off a video's audio on the host computer when using AirPlay in mirroring mode.

I've got a complex network with multiple sources and destinations, Apple TVs, stationary and portable macs, mobile devices, multiple stereos, multiple speakers, multiple zones, and AirPlay hasn't failed once.

So..it's flakey?

Your network probably needs some adjusting. Airplay works pretty flawlessly on a properly configured network with great WiFi coverage and speed.

It's flakey for me too. It cuts in and out at various times. It's very annoying. I'm using a 2012 iMac, 3 airport expresses (2012 version), and an Apple TV2.

BTW: I have great WiFi coverage and speed. I believe my network is properly configured as well.

I have two specific problems with airplay. 1) when streaming from my computer to multiple devices sometimes a single device will begin to stutter. I haven't found a solution beyond rebooting the destination. 2) once the stutter begins "sometimes" it will pause iTunes on the computer even though the other destinations were working fine.

I have tested my network for signal strength and for interference and found no problems. Since the issues occur on my home network it is acceptable although annoying. I think airplay should be robust enough that I could recommend it for commercial applications but I know it requires periodic checking and troubleshooting.

One thing that would be nice is if iTunes provided ANY feedback at all when there are problems. Unfortunately things like activity monitoring and logging are not present or are difficult to access. If anyone has a good way of accessing that kind of information please post it. I'm always glad to learn new things.

I think a relevant point when discussing Airplay flakiness is whether the Apple TV is connected via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. I have no issues using Airplay to Apple TV connected via Ethernet.

Airplay is entirely dependent on a robust network connection. Ethernet/Wi-Fi G or N, 2.4G v 5G are all important details.

Our Airplay speaker will cut out if I step into another part of the house which has a different Access point.

You may be onto something there. Mine is connected via ethernet.

In my above mentioned situation I have three wired ATV's and three wireless airport express units. Most of the trouble comes from one of the wired ATV's. So while wireless can certainly be a factor it isn't always the culprit.
