I'm very confused by the Sonos system. Do they allow you to share iTunes libraries from multiple computers? They are on sale right now:

Are they worth it, or should I simply use airport express and external speakers, or use airplay speakers?

BTw the Bluetooth Bose speakers at the verizon store worked very nicely with iPad 2.

So very confusing which is best...

I'm going to piggyback this thread, I just had a friend ask me about using sonos in a new 2000 sf. retail space. I'd be happy for input from anybody experienced with the product, or other wireless solutions for that matter.

My B-I-L has a Sonos set up across 3 parts of his home including a bridge connected to the main receiver. They control it through the iPad and use the Sonos App to playback from a single iTunes library. I'm not sure how it works with 3rd party music apps. I think Sonos supports Internet radio streams natively, but not sure about Pandora, Spotify, Rdio etc.

They like that the same music can be playing in all the zones seamlessly.

For us, we use a combo of Airplay and Bluetooth speakers*, moving away from docks. This works well for individual rooms and especially when teens/parents don't want to hear each others' music.

* Bowers & Wilkins Z2 speaker
* Bose Soundlink Mini
* Jambox

yes I still use my 70s vintage home stereo for music... even play those big, flat, round, black things on it.... Turn it up loud and you can hear it all aver the house, no problem. hell turn it up load and you can hear it half way down the block...

Do your BT speakers automatically pickup the source when it enters the room? What do you do to get the speaker to pickup the source...is it automatic?

Unfortunately, no they don't. They need to be paired each time for use which is a simple few second process, but not one my wife will ever deal with.

I'm not sure why they don't as my car reconnects automatically and starts playing right where it left off.

Airplay wins in this regard as no pairing is required, just choose the output on the device and go.

I have my Sonos system for years now. Love it.

Currently 5 zones setup: kids rooms, living room, kitchen, and backyard.

One zone has to be hard wired (ethernet) then it casts its own wireless network to stream music to the other zones in range.

It serves all music from my itunes library, and too many online streaming services to mention.

I used to have the controllers, now we just use our iphones, ipods, or desktop apps to choose the desired musical selection.

I have a combination of in wall speakers in the kitchen, bookshelf speakers in the kids rooms, and auxiliary connection to receiver in living room.

We use it mostly for background music everyday (itunes playlists or pandora). With party mode all zones can stream at one time with no lag. Or I can have all 5 zones steaming 5 different sources at 5 different volumes.

My kitchen zone has a subwoofer connected and I can rock out to my favorite 80s music while preparing diner until the family gets home.

I cannot speak to the integral speaker units Play 1, 3 or 5. But Sonos quality is very high with its speakers.

I do not use Sonos for home theater surround sound, although the Playbar and Sub look very enticing.

Sometimes in my house we have dueling DJ's and with their iPhones they can change the volume or streaming station of the opposing DJ's zone.

I am a happy with my Sonos experience and it works well with our home life style.

Sonos is very mac like in its ease of use, quality and price.
